Ježená can be explored through its landscape, local history and architectural heritage. A yellow-marked hiking trail from Čeřínek to Větrný Jeníkov runs through the village. The village square is home to a retention basin and the Baroque Chapel of St. James. Together, these features give you concrete points to consider when deciding whether Ježená is right for your trip: the landscape, a marked hiking route and the historic village setting sit side by side.

Landscape, Village Square and Hiking Trail

The built-up settlement lies in the valley of the Maršovský potok. The buildings extend along both banks, while the valley slopes form the natural setting. The stream, buildings on both banks and slopes together define the village’s spatial character.

A protected lime tree stands in the northern part of Ježená. There is also a retention basin on the village square. The two features are located at different points in the village: the lime tree is in the northern part, while the basin is on the village square.

The yellow-marked hiking trail from Čeřínek to Větrný Jeníkov passes through Ježená. It adds a route with two named endpoints to the description of the village. This makes it possible to distinguish the route through the village from the settlement’s own features: the trail describes a route, while the valley, lime tree and retention basin characterize Ježená.

Ježená’s Early History

Ježená was established as a forest settlement around the end of the 12th century. This original settlement included a village square on both sides of the Jezina stream. The approximate date places its establishment within a period rather than giving a specific founding year.

The first written mention dates to 1226. This record confirms Ježená as one of the villages owned by Želiv Monastery. The approximate date when the settlement was established and its first written mention are therefore two distinct historical details.

In the 13th century, German colonists settled in the originally Czech village during the silver rush. This stage adds another population development to the village’s history. It should be distinguished chronologically from the approximate establishment as a forest settlement and from the first written mention.

Mill and Chapel

The Hukauf Mill at house No. 4 was the middle of Ježená’s three former mills and has been documented since the 16th century. Today, the former mill has been converted for residential use. When considering the building, you can distinguish its former function as a mill from its current residential use.

The Baroque Chapel of St. James has stood on the village square since 1775. The building has a four-sided plan, and a small bell tower sits atop its pyramidal roof. The current bell dates from 1922. The dates refer to different things: 1775 indicates when the chapel began standing on the village square, while 1922 dates its current bell.
