Dolní Cerekev: Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Dolní Cerekev
When planning a hotel stay in Dolní Cerekev, you can weigh hiking, natural history and local history as different areas of focus. The Čeřínek nature trail offers a specific hiking option; Přední skála represents the natural and rock formations in the wider region. In the town, a municipal exhibition and architectural and cultural monuments add to the range of topics to explore.
The Čeřínek nature trail as a hiking destination
The Naučná stezka Čeřínek nature trail is 6.5 kilometres long and laid out as a circular route. It starts and ends at the same place and can be walked in either direction. The distance and circular layout answer different planning questions: the length indicates the extent of the route, while the starting and finishing points coincide. This circular route is not restricted to a particular direction of travel.
The 14 stops introduce the area’s geomorphological, botanical and zoological features. The nature trail thus brings together three perspectives on natural history: landforms, plant life and wildlife. The excursion from Dolní Cerekev to Čeřínek is also marked with blue and red trail markers.
Rocky landscape and the Přední skála Natural Monument
Přední skála, a natural monument first placed under protection on 3 May 1984, lies in the wider region around Dolní Cerekev. It protects notable geological and geomorphological features, as well as remnants of a mixed forest. Its natural values include near-natural fir-beech forests, predominantly acidophilous—that is, acid-loving—beech forests, numerous cavity-nesting birds and communities that depend on deadwood.
Distinctive formations include frost cliffs on both sides in the form of rock towers, cryoplanation terraces and rock overhangs that are partly bowl- or mushroom-shaped. The rock vegetation associated with them is also one of the natural monument’s special features. A rock outcrop at Přední skála is 11 metres high and 22 metres wide, offering views of the surrounding hills and settlements in Přírodní park Čeřínek. The Naučná stezka Čeřínek reaches the rocky summit of the Přírodní památka Přední skála at an elevation of 712 metres.
Cultural history in Dolní Cerekev
The municipal exhibition of Dolní Cerekev is housed in the birthplace of composer Karel Pádivý. It introduces the lives of four people from the town: Antonín Ptáček, František Prášil, Karel Pádivý and Blahoslav Smíšovský. Visits to the exhibition are possible by prior arrangement on 567 315 014. If you plan to visit, arrange it in advance.
There are also specific historical points of interest in the built-up part of the town. A column topped with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands at a crossroads. The Church of St Mary Magdalene was probably built in the mid-13th century. Original masonry survives in part of the western nave wall, up to a height of about four metres; the dating of the church remains probable rather than certain.
