Kamenice – Culture, Architectural History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Kamenice
Kamenice lies about 18 kilometres east of Jihlava. Points of interest for a stay include a Renaissance fortress, the Church of St James the Greater, the Chapel of St Anne and marked hiking trails. Visitors can also visit a brewery and a ceramics studio. If you are looking for a hotel in Kamenice, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: architectural history, time outdoors or a planned visit.
Renaissance Fortress and Architectural History
The Renaissance fortress acquired its present appearance through a renovation in the mid-16th century. Its façade is decorated with sgraffito dating from the late 16th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the period when it acquired its present form from the later decoration of the façade. Today, the fortress houses a museum and can be visited by prior arrangement; arrange your visit before travelling.
The Church of St James the Greater retains a late Romanesque core and a south Romanesque portal. In the second half of the 15th century, it received a new Gothic presbytery with a triumphal arch. Fragments of late Gothic paintings with a rustic character have been preserved on the walls of the nave. The Romanesque core and portal thus stand alongside a later Gothic building phase, with its own chancel and triumphal arch.
Chapels and Religious Traditions
The Chapel of St Anne offers a different architectural accent: it is an example of small-scale central sacred architecture in a rustic setting, dating from around 1730. To this day, it is used mainly for weekday services because it is more accessible. If you would like to combine a visit with a service, check the current arrangements in advance.
At the Chapel of St Mark, also known as the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, the tradition of a procession and devotional service was revived for the Feast of St Mark. It was intended to ensure good weather and a good harvest. Check in advance whether the procession and service are currently taking place.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
The green-marked hiking trail from Krahulov to Stáj passes through the municipality of Kamenice. The red-marked trail from Čeřínek to Třebíč runs along the western edge of the cadastral area, mostly through the Jihlava valley. The routes therefore differ in their location: one passes through the municipality, while the other runs along its western edge and largely through the river valley. The Prosenka natural monument is also within the municipality. Check trail conditions and markings on site before setting out.
Brewery and Studio Visits
Kamenický pivovar MadCat is located in a former cooperative distillery building dating from 1912. The building was saved in 2018 and converted into a modern craft brewery. Guided brewery tours with tastings straight from the lagering tanks are available. Check availability before your trip.
The Keramika U slunečních hodin studio occasionally opens its premises to individual and group visitors and offers creative workshops. Visits depend on events or prior arrangements; enquire in advance to see whether an appointment is possible.
