Kienberg: Vltava, Churches and Industrial History
Accommodation in Kienberg
Kienberg brings together themes that offer a practical starting point for planning a trip: the paper industry, an early electrified railway line, protected natural areas and churches on the Vltava. If you are looking for a hotel in Kienberg, you can first decide whether you would like to focus your stay mainly on local history, religious architecture or the landscape.
Industrial History and Railways
In Loučovice, Arnošt Porák founded the paper mill in the 1880s. By the turn of the 20th century, it employed more than 1,000 people. Taken together, these details span the period from its founding in the late 19th century to a large workforce around 1900. The mill therefore provides a tangible point of entry into the town’s industrial history.
Another historical thread is the railway line from Certlov to Lipno. It was built between 1909 and 1911 and was the second electrified railway line in Bohemia. The mill and the railway thus represent different aspects of local history: industrial production and electrified transport. The railway’s construction dates and the decade in which the mill was founded give you two clearly distinct points of reference in time.
Protected Areas and the Vltava Landscape
The cadastral area of Loučovice includes Vyšebrodsko Nature Park, the Medvědí hora Natural Monument and the Čertova stěna–Luč National Nature Reserve. The Rašeliniště Kapličky protected area is also located there. The designations distinguish between a nature park, a natural monument and a national nature reserve; Rašeliniště Kapličky adds another protected area to the list.
In the Čertova stěna–Luč area, the Vltava flows through a natural riverbed filled with large granite boulders. This stretch is known as Čertovy proudy. The river’s course and the granite boulders give the landscape a tangible geological dimension. Here, the Vltava can therefore be understood not only as a river, but also through its distinctive riverbed.
Hiking and Cycling Routes
Marked hiking and cycling routes connect Loučovice with Lipno nad Vltavou, Vyšší Brod and the Austrian border region. This gives you two activities and several named connections to consider when planning: hiking or cycling, with destinations in the Czech Republic and routes towards the Austrian border region. Local history also has a precisely dated connection to water sports: the first annual water slalom on the Čertovy proudy took place on Sunday, 26 September 1954. The race was organised by the TJ Tatran Loučovice water sports group. The date marks the beginning of this historic racing tradition, not a current event date.
Churches and Architectural History
The Church of Saint Procopius is located in Loučovice on the left bank of the Vltava. The building is also referred to as the Chapel of Saint Procopius, also known as Saint Jodocus, and is listed as a cultural monument in the Czech heritage register. The chapel is said to have been founded in 1361 by Jošt (?) of Rosenberg and remodelled in the 16th century.
The Church of Saint Ulrich stands on the right bank of the Vltava. It was built in the 1480s on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to Saint Theobald, which Oldřich of Rosenberg had founded in 1361. After a fire in the 16th century, the church was restored between 1640 and 1644. The histories of the two buildings thus span an earlier chapel, the construction of a church in the late 15th century and a later restoration.
