Rosenthal offers a range of highlights for a trip that combines cultural history with outdoor routes. These include a church and a pilgrimage chapel, a forest trail with interactive elements, and a cycling route. There is also a technology exhibition and the convivial event Vepřové hody. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish the highlights by architecture, activity and community culture.

Churches, chapel and heritage

On 6 November 2025, the ensemble comprising the “Chapel of Our Lady of Help” and the individual Stations of the Cross in Rožmitál na Šumavě was declared a cultural monument.

The “Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary”, now the “Church of Saint Simon and Saint Jude”, was already a parish church in 1259. The present building was constructed in 1909 in the Pseudo-Gothic style; the church is one of the cultural and historical monuments of Rožmitál na Šumavě. The two dates refer to different aspects: 1259 marks its status as a parish church, while 1909 refers to the present church building. “Pseudo-Gothic” describes a design inspired by Gothic architectural forms.

The pilgrimage chapel “Chapel of Our Lady of Help” lies 420 metres northeast of the “Church of Saint Simon and Saint Jude” in Rožmitál na Šumavě. It is a Baroque, centrally planned, plastered building with a dome above a spring. A central plan is a building layout organised around a centre. Together, the dome and spring create a clearly defined architectural image. The Baroque chapel and the Pseudo-Gothic church represent different styles.

Forest trail and cycling route

The Forest Trail in Rožmitál na Šumavě guides visitors through woodland, meadows and riverside areas using interactive and educational elements. The different landscapes are one aspect of the route; its interactive and educational features add an informative dimension. The trail also includes a two-storey observation tower for children and a covered seating area with a table and benches. The tower is intended for children, while the seating area offers a sheltered place to take a break.

The Povltavská cycling route starts in Jistebník and continues via Čeřín, Rožmitál na Šumavě and Hněvanov to Trojan and the border. The cycling route is defined by the sequence of named places, while the Forest Trail is characterised by landscapes and interactive features. The two activities therefore differ not only in how you get around, but also in how they are described.

In the area around Rosenthal, there is also a route leading to the Vltava; swimming is possible at Branná campsite.

Technology and community culture

The “Telegraph, Telephone and Radio” exhibition includes TESLA radios, measuring instruments and around 120 TESLA telephones; the collection may continue to grow. The subject therefore extends beyond telephony to include radio and measurement technology.

Vepřové hody is a convivial gathering with a tasting of slaughter products. Unlike the exhibition, the focus here is on getting together and sampling the food.
