Nové Domky at the Lipno Reservoir
Accommodation in Nové Domky
Nové Domky lies on the right bank of the Lipno Reservoir. When looking for a hotel, nature conservation, road cycling connections and the local history shaped by the construction of the reservoir offer different starting points for planning your stay.
Landscape and Nature Conservation
The regional biocorridor RBK 3054 Čertovo kopyto–Předmostí runs through the locality; from a nature conservation perspective, Nové Domky is considered a valuable area. The extensive regional biocentre RBC 557 Čertovo kopyto is also designated nearby. The spatial distinction matters: the biocorridor runs through the locality, while the biocentre is nearby.
Čertovo kopyto appears in several names: as part of the names of the biocorridor and biocentre, and as the name of a rock formation near the Lipno Reservoir. The references are distinct: they concern a biocorridor, a biocentre and a rock formation.
The Čertova stěna–Luč National Nature Reserve is also located in the municipality of Loučovice, with a unique stone sea and the romantic valley of the Vltava River.
Cycling and Hiking
After crossing the dam of the Lipno Reservoir, the ROAD 4 – Kolem Lipna road cycling route passes through Nové Domky. The first section of ROAD 5 – Do Krumlova is identical to ROAD 4 and therefore also includes the section through the locality. Thus, the two routes share the described alignment through Nové Domky; here, ROAD 5 initially follows ROAD 4.
Čertovo kopyto can be reached from the car park at the Lipno Reservoir dam via a blue-marked hiking trail. Markings and access conditions can change; check both before setting out. The rock formation is a remarkable but little-known place near the Lipno Reservoir. Its name comes from a boulder that closely resembles a hoof. The road cycling routes pass through the locality, while the marked hiking trail leads to the rock.
Historical Development of the Settlement
The historic settlement of Nové Domky consisted mostly of smallholder homesteads. The historic name Neuhäusel was first used for Nové Domky in 1710. Lippnerschwebe (Lipenský zdvih), a former loggers’ meadow, was a distinct historic part of the settlement. A railway terminus of the same name stood nearby; the meadow and the station were therefore separate places with the same name.
After the original population was expelled following the war, Nové Domky was partially resettled. However, construction of the Lipno Reservoir and the subsequent establishment of the border zone brought permanent settlement almost entirely to an end.
Today’s Nové Domky locality lies on the right bank of the reservoir. The former historic locality on the right bank, part of the original settlement, is now completely submerged beneath the waters of the Lipno Reservoir. In considering the area’s history, today’s locality should therefore be distinguished from the former settlement site.
