Adolfsthal (Holubov) lies in the foothill valleys along the Vltava and the Křemžský potok and is part of the Blanský les complex. Nature, hiking trails and cultural heritage give a stay different points of focus: you can explore the landscape, a route to Dívčí Kámen Castle, and historical topics ranging from the history of milling to the Celtic era. When looking for a hotel, it helps to consider in advance which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.

River Landscape and Protected Area

The Holubovské hadce protected area includes an open serpentine pine forest on the slopes of the Křemžský potok. Holubovské hadce is also a South Bohemian site of the critically endangered serpentine pink (Dianthus carthusianorum subsp. capillifrons). Those interested in nature will find two specific points of interest here: the distinctive forest type and a rare plant subspecies. Alongside its location by the water, the landscape therefore also has a botanical focus.

Hiking Trail to Dívčí Kámen Castle

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Holubov along the Křemžský potok to Dívčí Kámen Castle. The castle stands above the confluence of the Křemžský potok and the Vltava. The distance from the car park to the castle is given as 2.5 km. The trail along the stream and the castle’s location at the confluence describe different aspects of the route: the path itself and the destination. There is also a place to swim nearby.

Mill History and Technical Traces

Originally built in the Renaissance style, the mill complex in Holubov is a rare surviving record of the local development of milling from the 16th to the 20th century. Three Renaissance exterior walls of the mill building have been preserved; their sgraffito decorations are still partly visible. The complex also includes a small power station with a Francis turbine dating from 1929. The site thus brings together architectural history and a specific technical feature. The surviving walls and partly visible sgraffito tell the story of the building’s design, while the dated turbine illustrates another aspect of local milling history.

Oppidum and Masopust

In the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, the Celtic oppidum of Třísov was an important centre on a trade route linking Bohemia with the Danube region. This takes us from the more recent technical history of the mill complex far back into the Celtic era. Both the “růžičková koleda” and the “střapatá koleda” take part in the Masopustní průvod in Holubov. The participants dance and sing, and wish people health, good fortune and contentment. Unlike the mill and the oppidum, the focus here is on a procession, its customs and its good wishes.
