Malsching combines a distinctive church and architectural history with a rural landscape. There are several themes to consider when choosing your stay: the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Thumberg Chapel, the landscape around Turmberg and the cycling routes that include Malšín. If you want to focus on historic buildings, different points of interest come to the fore than when choosing a cycling route or a landscape highlight.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its architectural history

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its surrounding wall are listed as cultural monuments. The present-day church originated as the early Gothic Church of St. Margaret. The former Church of St. Margaret was first mentioned in writing in 1339; the sacristy clearly dates from the second half of the 13th century. These dates refer to different aspects of its history: 1339 marks the first written mention, while the dating of the sacristy relates to a period in the building’s construction. The church was remodelled in 1593, given a Baroque makeover at the end of the 17th century and altered again in the second half of the 19th century. Thus, an early building phase and several later alterations stand alongside one another, before the present-day name, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, comes into play.

Thumberg Chapel and traces on Turmberg

The pilgrimage Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was built on Turmberg in 1856 and lies 450 m south of the church. Thumberg Chapel is a prominent landmark of Malšín and a cultural monument. Grille doors allow visitors to look inside the small church building. When visiting, check whether it is possible to see inside through the doors. At the site of the former watch castle near Thumberg Chapel, there are two benches with views to the south, as well as a covered rest area with a waste bin. This adds a practical place to stop to the opportunity to view the cultural monument. The remains of a rampart that once surrounded a tower or castle complex can also be seen in the area around Turmberg. The chapel, rest area and rampart remains offer different points of interest for experiencing the area as an architectural and cultural landscape.

Landscape and views

About half of Malšín’s cadastral area is forested; a large part is used for agriculture as meadows and pastures. From Tumberg, there are expansive views to the south over a hilly, wooded landscape with meadows. This gives you a sense both of the broad distribution of woodland and agricultural land and of a specific southern vista. If the landscape matters to you as well as the churches, the view from Tumberg adds a distinct theme to the cultural and historical focus.

Cycling routes through and across Malšín

Cycling routes also offer a way to explore the area. The Krumlovská cycle route passes through Malšín, while the Velotrail 1–Frymbursko runs through Malšín. Malšín also lies on the 42.3 km Vyšší Brod–Malšín–Frymburk–Hořice na Šumavě cycling route. The routes can be distinguished by their names and their respective connections to Malšín; the total length is also given for the Vyšší Brod–Malšín–Frymburk–Hořice na Šumavě route. This gives you two aspects to consider for orientation: the routes that cross Malšín or run through the area, and the route with a stated total length. You can therefore treat cycling as a distinct theme of your stay and differentiate it from the churches and landscape highlights.
