Goldenkron: Monastery, Art and the Vltava
Accommodation in Goldenkron
Goldenkron (Zlatá Koruna) is shaped above all by its Cistercian monastery. Gothic architecture, a Baroque monastery pharmacy and a late medieval image of the Virgin Mary give its cultural history several facets. The historic town center, the Vltava and the Fritsch Trail complete this picture. If you are looking for hotels for a stay in Goldenkron, you can consider in advance whether monastery history, art or river scenery should be your main focus.
Monastery and art history
The Cistercian monastery was founded in 1263 thanks to the Bohemian king Přemysl Otakar II. The complex is considered one of the most valuable examples of Gothic architecture in Central Europe. The date places its origins in the 13th century; the art-historical classification describes the significance of the architectural complex beyond the town itself. This gives you an introduction that takes into account both the history of its founding and its architectural importance.
The Zlatokorunská Madonna offers another point of reference in time. The image was painted between 1410 and 1420 and was probably commissioned directly for the Cistercian monastery in Zlatá Koruna. Its date is considerably later than the monastery’s founding, bringing the history of its foundation and medieval art into focus as distinct historical perspectives. The direct commission remains a probability.
The Baroque monastery pharmacy is another subject in its own right. It is displayed in the former kitchen and includes more than 1,000 pharmacy vessels, laboratory glassware and herbal medicines. The vessels are only one part of the collection: laboratory glassware and herbal remedies complement them. Alongside architecture and painting, this offers you an insight through tangible objects and their different functions.
Townscape and landscape
In the monastery’s main courtyard, the Kapucínka linden stands beside the Chapel of the Guardian Angels. It is almost 30 meters tall, and its age is estimated at 400 years. The tree adds a distinctive natural feature to the monastery courtyard. Its height and estimated age create two different impressions: the linden’s size and its long history.
Goldenkron’s historic town center is a protected heritage zone. At the same time, the entire cadastral area of Zlatá Koruna is part of the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area. The designations differ in scope: the heritage zone applies to the historic center, while landscape protection covers the entire cadastral area. If you are interested in the townscape and landscape, these give you two clearly defined levels of protection.
The artificial Jordánek canal is another feature of the historic landscape. It is three kilometers long and still exists today. Alongside the monastery and the protected townscape, this specific waterway is also part of Goldenkron’s character.
Fritsch Trail and the Vltava
The Fritsch Trail offers a perspective for those who enjoy being active. Its final section is seven kilometers long and ends in Goldenkron. The trail runs along the left bank of the Vltava and offers views of the river and landscape before reaching the town. The route’s distance, bank and destination are specified, and the landscape views are also part of its character. If you are considering a hiking route as part of your hotel stay, the trail offers a clearly defined point of reference.
The river’s use is also part of the townscape: the historic weir and a small hydroelectric power station are still in place at Zlatá Koruna. Canoeists and raftsmen use the lock. The river therefore offers two perspectives side by side: views of the landscape along the Fritsch Trail and the practical use of the lock by these groups. Cultural history, the trail and use of the river appeal to different travel interests.
