Chroboly: Hiking Trails, Nature and Cultural History
Accommodation in Chroboly
Two marked hiking trails, the U Poustevníka protected area and several cultural and historical themes give you clear starting points for planning a trip to Chroboly. You can compare the routes by their stated destinations or focus on natural and architectural history.
Hiking Trails and Their Destinations
The blue-marked hiking route 1228 leads from Chroboly via Libínské sedlo and Křišťanovický rybník to the ruins of Hus Castle, and continues to Volary. Its description names several intermediate destinations and a final destination beyond them. When planning, you can consider which of these stops will be the deciding factor for your outing.
The green-marked hiking route 3409 also starts in Chroboly and follows the Zlatý potok to Vitějovice. The difference lies in the route described: route 1228 passes several named intermediate destinations and continues to Volary, while route 3409 follows the Zlatý potok to Vitějovice. This makes it possible to compare the trails by their specific destinations and routes. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking current conditions before setting out.
Nature and Habitats
The U Poustevníka protected area comprises wet spruce and alder forests with a rich variety of flowering plants. It also includes species-rich wet meadows and peat meadows with endangered plant species. Both wet forests and open wetland habitats, along with their plant diversity, are therefore central features.
Tisy u Chrobol is home to the largest known population of European yew in the foothills of Prachatice. Nature enthusiasts can therefore explore two distinct points of interest: the habitats and plant species of U Poustevníka, and the European yew at Tisy u Chrobol.
History and Cultural Monuments
The pilgrimage chapel of Panny Marie Lurdské in Chroboly is registered as an immovable cultural monument. It was built at a healing spring and became a place of pilgrimage. Restoration work began in 2003; by 2011, the chapel had been renovated. Its history thus encompasses both its origins as a pilgrimage site and a later period of renovation.
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Chroboly was originally Gothic and underwent an extensive Baroque renovation from 1754 to 1758. Its architectural history therefore distinguishes an original Gothic phase from a clearly dated Baroque redesign.
The Příslop conservation area protects urban-planning, architectural, historical, artistic, aesthetic and landscape values. Its protection thus covers multiple aspects, from the layout of the settlement to its historical and landscape qualities.
Keplův mlýn (Köppelmühle) lies below Chroboly and is one of the oldest mills in the region. It was first mentioned in 1554 in the urbarium of the Český Krumlov estate. This date links the mill to a specific historical record and the estate whose urbarium mentions it.
The war memorial in Chroboly commemorates residents of Chroboly and the surrounding settlements who fell in the First World War. It was renovated at its original location in the centre of the village and is considered a symbol of mutual understanding and Czech-German friendship.
