Get to know Lhenice through its architecture, religious history, Stations of the Cross and town square. The area also has a long fruit-growing tradition, as well as hiking and cycling trails throughout Lhenicko. This gives you several different interests to consider when planning your trip: you can use local history, nature and regional fruit culture to decide what matters for your stay.

Architectural history across several eras

St. James’s Church is the most significant monument in Lhenice. It has early Gothic origins, and the oldest records of the sanctuary date back to the 14th century. In the 1730s, it was remodelled in the Baroque style. Its early Gothic origins, medieval history and Baroque transformation mark different historical layers of the building.

Panský dům tells another chapter in the history of local architecture. Built in the first half of the 17th century, it is a renovated Renaissance manor house that originally served as a noble fortress. The date of construction, architectural classification and former function each describe a different aspect of the same house: the 17th century indicates when it was built, Renaissance describes its style, and fortress its original character. Together with the church, it offers a glimpse of several eras and architectural forms.

The town square also has a more recent history: it was completely revitalised between 2015 and 2018. The restored Charles IV Fountain adorns the square and is in working order. These dates give the square’s redesign its own point of reference alongside the architectural histories of the church and Panský dům.

Stations of the Cross and trails through the landscape

The Lhenice Stations of the Cross were created in the second half of the 19th century and comprise 14 stations. They are set in natural surroundings above the town, at the edge of the forest. In 2016, the Stations of the Cross were completely reconstructed, including the Chapel of the Virgin Mary. The stations, the chapel and the location each offer a different perspective on the site: its layout, one of its structures and its landscape setting. This distinguishes it from a single historic building without losing its connection to local history.

Úvoz u Lhenic offers another kind of route: a reconstructed, approximately 500-metre section of the original Linecká stezka. It has tourist facilities and interactive learning features for children. While the 14 stations and the chapel shape the character of the Stations of the Cross, Úvoz combines its connection to an original route with learning features and facilities. The length is approximate.

The Blanský les Protected Landscape Area extends into Lhenicko. There, tourist activities are mainly possible on signposted hiking and cycling trails. In the wider region around Lhenice, the Blanský les landscape includes protected mixed forests, flowering meadows, serpentinite and limestone habitats, as well as the Vltava Canyon. The marked trails in Lhenicko thus sit alongside a broader view of the diverse landscape of the wider natural area.

Fruit growing and local products

Fruit has been grown in Lhenice for a long time, which is why the surrounding area has come to be known as “Zahrada jižních Čech” (“Garden of South Bohemia”). The fruit-growing tradition is also reflected in local processing: Pěstitelská pálenice a moštárna Karel Gregora in Lhenice processes stone fruits such as cherries, sour cherries and plums, as well as pome fruits such as apples and pears, into pure fruit juice with no chemical preservatives. The different kinds of fruit offer a tangible insight into the variety of produce processed here.

Lhenická ovocná šťáva invites visitors to sample its products on site after contacting them in advance. If you are planning a tasting, check the arrangements before your visit, as they may change. This lets you consider local fruit culture alongside architectural history and the natural landscape as a distinct focus when planning your trip.
