Stachy – Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Stachy
When deciding on a trip to Stachy, nature, sacred architecture, historic houses, and firefighting history can each provide a different focus. Malý Polec is a protected raised bog; churches and historic ensembles draw attention to architectural history, while the Pošumavské Fire Museum showcases firefighting technology and local history.
Malý Polec and its trails
Malý Polec is a raised bog below Churáňovský vrch. It lies at an elevation of 1,108 to 1,183 metres and about one kilometre from Zadov. Since 1992, the area has been protected as a natural monument to preserve endangered plants and animals. The high elevation and nature conservation are therefore the main features of this excursion destination. From Zadov, Malý Polec can be reached via a hiking trail in the direction of Zlatá Studna. Check the route locally before setting out.
Churches and historic houses
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built between 1842 and 1849. It houses a crystal chandelier that recalls Stachy’s glassmaking past. This specific feature of the church also offers a glimpse into the area’s craft history. The Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows dates from 1808. The two sacred buildings offer different historical perspectives: the chapel with its Baroque character, and the church with its later construction date and crystal chandelier.
Historic houses can also be distinguished by their construction dates and building styles. Most of the buildings in the Stachy conservation reserve date from the 17th to the 19th centuries. In the eastern part of the municipality, there is also a designated reserve ensemble containing houses of the Šumava type, some built using log construction. Alongside the buildings’ historical period, a specific construction method and a distinct house type are therefore also in focus.
Firefighting technology and local history
The Pošumavské Fire Museum in Stachy displays fire engines, fire pumps, uniforms, and historic firefighting technology and equipment across two floors. The exhibition on Stachy’s history complements this focus with craft tools, historical objects, and items from Stachy and the surrounding area. The museum thus brings together firefighting technology with craft and local history. Visitor arrangements may change; check the current conditions before visiting.
Trails and nature in the townscape
Stašské Square is the starting point for numerous hiking trails. The lawn in the square by the church in Stachy is also a protected locality for boletes. This mushroom habitat is seasonal and, as a nature feature in the townscape, differs from the Malý Polec raised bog. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between a natural monument in the uplands and a protected mushroom locality by the church square.
Winter sports at the Zadov-Churáňov ski area
The Zadov-Churáňov ski area has seven runs, mostly easy to intermediate, with a total length of 4.5 kilometres. The number of runs and their total length provide two specific points of reference for assessing what is on offer; the stated difficulty ranges mostly from easy to intermediate. Operating conditions are seasonal. If skiing is part of your travel plans, check current operations in advance.
