Muckov combines cycling routes with a history of settlement and limestone. Several named routes pass through the village; the Muckovské vápencové lomy are located in a forest about 300 metres to the west. When planning your trip, both route length and course, as well as the history and natural features of the quarries, may therefore be relevant.

Cycling routes through Muckov

The 47-kilometre Květušínská cesta is paved and follows cycling route 1245 between Světlík and Černá v Pošumaví via Muckov. The 74.2-kilometre Krumlovská cycling route also passes through the village. It is a loop connecting Lipensko and Český Krumlov and offering nature and cultural experiences. The two routes therefore differ in that one is a paved route between two named places, while the other is a longer loop between Lipensko and Český Krumlov. Their length and course provide different points of reference when considering cycling routes for your stay.

The route to the Olšina pond runs from Černá along the Muckovské vápencové lomy to Muckov, where it turns towards Mokrá. It loops in an arc around Little Lipno and the Olšina pond. The Naučný okruh Světlík also starts in Černá, runs to Muckov and continues to Světlík. On the way back to Černá v Pošumaví, Horem lesem passes through Muckov and Slavkovice. The routes therefore also differ in their destinations and the places they pass through: one leads to the Olšina pond, while the other continues to Světlík; Horem lesem, meanwhile, passes through Muckov on its way back to Černá v Pošumaví.

Limestone quarries and their features

The Muckovské vápencové lomy are located in a forest about 300 metres west of Muckov. Their striking features include monumental rock pillars. The quarries are also botanically valuable, serve as winter quarters for bats, and preserve remains of underground crystal limestone mining. Natural features and traces of earlier mining can therefore be found side by side here. The Horem lesem route lists the quarries as one of its points of interest; however, they are closed to the public. Bear this access restriction in mind when planning your trip.

Settlement history and limestone

Muckov is documented as a settlement as far back as 1518. The Naučný okruh Světlík provides a broader historical perspective: the route passes through places whose history goes back to the medieval settlement of the Bohemian Forest. This makes it possible to distinguish between Muckov’s own documented history as a settlement and the historical context of the places along the loop.

The use of limestone is another part of the village’s history. Finely ground Muckov limestone is said to have been used in 1914 as a medicinal powder in first-aid kits for soldiers sent to the front. It is also said to have been supplied to Bayer in Germany and to a company in Paris that made cosmetic powder. These reported uses therefore relate to different contexts: first-aid kits and the manufacture of cosmetic powder.
