Mokrá: Graphite Mining, Chapel and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Mokrá
If you would like to take cultural and historical themes and a cycling route into account when choosing a place to stay, Mokrá offers several specific points of interest. These include the history of graphite mining, the Josefova štola, and the chapel in the village. In the surrounding area, the Rybářská bašta near Olšina adds an exhibition on fishing and hunting. The sites have different connections to Mokrá: mining extended across the village and its surroundings, while the chapel and settlement history are directly connected with Mokrá.
Graphite Mining and the Josefova štola
Graphite mining in the area of Mokrá and its wider surroundings involved twelve shafts, 40 to 70 metres deep. The year 1846 is also part of the local mining history: the graphite boom led to a significant expansion of mining in Mokrá at that time. Together, the number of shafts, their depth range, and the year give an impression of the scale of this subject in both space and time.
The Josefova štola is a drainage adit dating from 1897. A drainage adit carries water away; in the case of the Josefova štola, this technical type can therefore be linked to a specific historic structure. A newly built gravel educational trail leads to its portal. The portal of the Josefova štola near Mokrá, close to Černá v Pošumaví, is a recently reconstructed technical monument and is considered open. This connects the history of mining with a named path to the portal and a reconstructed technical monument.
Chapel and Settlement History
The chapel in Mokrá also has a clearly dated history: it dates from 1849. In 1999, it was saved from complete deterioration and restored. The two years represent different milestones—the chapel’s construction and its later rescue. Its history thus adds another local subject to the longer history of mining.
Historical accounts describe Mokrá as the most important village in the Hirzův Újezd settlement district, also known as Mokerský Újezd. The historic settlement district is named after Burgrave Hirzo. He owned the area before 1263; his ownership is first mentioned in the founding charter of Zlatá Koruna Monastery. This account gives the settlement history its own timeframe, distinguishing it from the chapel’s later construction and restoration dates.
Cycling Route and Surrounding Area
The Rybník Olšina cycling route runs from Černá along the Muckov limestone quarries to Muckov, where it turns towards Mokrá. From Mokrá, it continues to the Olšina pond. The route description identifies two distinct sections for orientation: the stretch via Muckov towards Mokrá, followed by the continuation from Mokrá to the pond. It thus establishes a specific connection between Mokrá and the route’s onward course towards Olšina.
Near Olšina, in the wider area around Mokrá, is the Rybářská bašta, which houses an exhibition on fishing and hunting. This offers a different point of interest from the local mining and settlement history. If you choose places to visit by theme, you can therefore distinguish between the historic sites in Mokrá, the cycling route, and this exhibition in the surrounding area.
