Dolní Vltavice lies on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Lipno Reservoir. At the same time, large parts of the historic settlement were flooded by the reservoir; only a few newer houses remain on higher ground. Its waterside location and history provide different points of reference when weighing up Dolní Vltavice as a travel destination: alongside the reservoir landscape, traces of the former settlement also shape the way visitors see the destination.

Local history and historic traces

The first written mention of Dolní Vltavice dates to 1268; in 1505, the settlement was granted town status. The former Church of St. Linhart was founded before 1355 and demolished before the Lipno Reservoir flooded the area. Its history therefore reaches back to a time before the reservoir changed the layout of the settlement.

The chapel near Dolní Vltavice is distinct from the former church. It was built in 1648 as a memorial to the victims of a plague epidemic and converted to its present form in 1753. Two protected linden trees, more than 350 years old, grow beside the chapel. Here, a specific reason for remembrance, a later structural alteration and the trees’ great age come together.

The bunkers reveal another historic function of the settlement: in the 1950s, at least seven bunkers in Dolní Vltavice, equipped with embrasures for heavy machine guns, protected the crossing over the Vltava. Alongside the religious and architectural traces, the defense of this crossing is also part of the settlement’s history.

Peninsula, beach and water sports

The peninsula location is a distinctive feature of Dolní Vltavice. A sandy-green beach lies between the ferry from Dolní Vltavice and the pier at Hotel Resortu Relax. Beach services are seasonal and may change, so check before visiting.

During the season, pedal kayaks, paddleboards and motorboats are available to rent at the beach at Resortu RELAX in Dolní Vltavice. No boating license is required for these motorboats. Check rental options and operating conditions before your trip. Dolní Vltavice is considered the only suitable place for windsurfing in certain wind directions; the waves are considered fairly average. If you are considering windsurfing, check the conditions and access locally.

Ferry and route connection

The Frymburk–Dolní Vltavice–Frymburk round trip takes one hour. Timetables and journey times may change, so it is advisable to check the current schedule before traveling. Bicycles are carried as luggage on the Dolní Vltavice ferry service; carriage conditions may also change and should be checked before your trip.

The Schwarzenbergská cesta runs from Černá v Pošumaví via the ferry crossing at Dolní Vltavice to Kyselov. These are two different routes: the round trip runs from Frymburk to Dolní Vltavice and back, while the Schwarzenbergská cesta connects the named places via the ferry crossing. Bicycle transport on the ferry is a separate practical detail and does not replace checking the relevant carriage conditions.
