Radnice: Walking Routes and Local History
Accommodation in Radnice
Radnice can be explored from two perspectives: the walking routes vary considerably in length, while the castle, museum, Jewish cemetery and synagogue reveal different aspects of the town’s history. If you are looking for a hotel in Radnice, you can weigh up whether routes or architectural and cultural history should play a greater role in your stay when choosing your destination.
Walking routes by length and starting point
At 2.3 km, the Radnický okruh is the shortest of the three walking routes and leads to sights in Radnice and the surrounding area. The Hylákův okruh covers 12.8 km and starts in the town square. At 24 km, the Šternberský okruh is the longest; it starts at Kašpar-Šternberk Square and is suitable for cyclists. The distances provide a direct comparison of the routes’ lengths; the longest route is also suitable for cyclists.
Natural and cultural history
The Jewish cemetery of Radnice lies about 1.5 km southeast of the town, at the edge of the forest, and contains 210 graves. The epitaphs are written in Hebrew, Czech and German; these three languages shape the character of this memorial site. The Ovčín locality is in the immediate vicinity of Radnice. Volcanic ash buried fossil flora there at the site where it originally grew. This adds a palaeontological perspective to the town’s local and architectural history.
For a regional perspective: the Rokycany District has marked hiking trails as well as well-maintained forest paths with rest areas. This places Radnice’s walking routes in the context of the wider district.
Castle, museum and Baroque architectural history
Radnice Castle is early Baroque and was built before 1673. Its present appearance dates from after 1719. The castle’s history therefore encompasses both its early construction and the later development of its present form.
The Muzeum Josefa Hyláka was founded in 1892 as the first museum in the Rokycany District. It is housed in a burgher’s house dating from the first third of the 18th century, which later became part of the castle complex. The museum’s founding and the building belong to different periods: the house is older than the museum. Around 1745, an important Baroque building was erected in Radnice at the expense of Jan Václav z Bubna a Litic, probably based on a design by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.
Practical information on site
The Radnice Tourist Information Centre offers information and guided tours, and has bicycle racks. Guided tours of the historic beer cellars are available during the summer season, from April to October; outside the tourist season, they are available on request. The synagogue in Radnice houses an eco-centre that visitors can visit.
