Hlohovice offers several specific points of interest for exploring architectural and local history: the Starý zámek fortress, the Nový zámek complex, the Church of the Holy Trinity, and memorials at the school building and in Doubí. The historical reference points range from the first mention of the fortress in 1519 to the statue dating from 1766 and the stone cross from 1847. Anyone interested in historic architectural styles will find a variety of buildings, styles and dates here, rather than a single, uniform theme.

Starý zámek and Nový zámek

The Starý zámek fortress in Hlohovice was first mentioned in 1519. It features Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. This makes it possible to identify several styles rather than assigning the fortress to just one period. Its building form is also described: Starý zámek is a masonry building consisting of two wings arranged at right angles to each other, each with its own roof. In plan, one wing therefore extends in a different direction from the other. The building form can be understood both from this arrangement and from the separate roofs.

Nový zámek adds a different architectural history to the comparison. Construction began at the end of the 18th century, remained unfinished, and was altered in the first half of the 19th century. Nový zámek is designated an immovable cultural monument. The fully enclosed complex consists of a château building and farm buildings, which together form a rectangular courtyard. Unlike the description of Starý zámek, the focus here is not on the arrangement of two wings, but on how the buildings combine around the courtyard.

Church and architectural history

The Church of the Holy Trinity was built from 1727 to 1734 to a design by the Baroque architect František Ignác Prée. It is located on the western edge of Hlohovice. Its orientation is also specified: the presbytery faces west, while the façade faces east. The presbytery is the choir area by the altar; this description therefore distinguishes the orientation of that area from the orientation of the façade. For an overview of the building’s history, a clear time period, attribution to an architect, and the orientation of the church are all relevant.

Memorials in Hlohovice and Doubí

A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1766 stands in front of the school building in Hlohovice. At the Doubí memorial site, there is a burial mound with a stone cross in the centre; the cross was erected in 1847. The statue’s date therefore precedes the date of the cross. Both places provide a different focus from the château buildings and the church: here, the emphasis is on a specific memorial, its location and its date.

Doubí can also be located geographically. On the road from Svinná towards Kamenec, the memorial site is on the right.
