Zdechovice: Local History and Marked Trails
Accommodation in Zdechovice
Zdechovice is considered the gateway to the Železné hory. For planning a trip, the village offers several points of interest: a church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, the history of the castle and marked trails. Calling it a gateway places Zdechovice in its regional context; for choosing a specific hike, however, the starting point, trail name and markings are what matter. Whether you are more interested in local history or a hike may influence your choice of where to stay.
Local History and Historic Routes
The church still stands today; it acquired its current appearance after a Baroque renovation in 1716. The Trstenická stezka historically passed through Zdechovice, where it split into routes toward Sázava and Prague. Historical evidence of iron mining adds to the local history. The year 1716 dates the church’s present appearance; the Trstenická stezka, by contrast, represents a historic route with two directions.
Castle Park and Memorial Sites
The castle in Zdechovice originally included a plot with a park, a fallow deer enclosure and two ponds. The castle park underwent extensive revitalization in 2015. The original castle grounds and the park’s revitalization mark different phases: the former included not only the park but also the fallow deer enclosure and two ponds; the later project concerned the park. Memorial sites in the forests of Zdechovice include Petrova šlápota and Obří postele. Obří postele is also a natural rock formation made of stone pebbles that resembles large beds.
Hiking Trails and Cycling
The Svatojakubská cesta comes from Kladruby nad Labem to Zdechovice along a blue-marked hiking trail. At the Obří postele signpost, it continues along a green-marked trail toward Záboří nad Labem. Another blue-marked trail leads from Řečany nad Labem to Zdechovice; a signpost is located in the village square by the memorial to the fallen. The different starting points and markings can help you choose a route: the Svatojakubská cesta comes from Kladruby nad Labem and changes from blue to green after Zdechovice, while the trail from Řečany nad Labem is marked blue. The Trstenická stezka belongs to the history of historic routes; the marked trails describe specific hiking routes. Check the trail markings before setting out, as they may change.
Because of the gently rolling terrain, the tourist trails in Zdechovice can generally also be used as cycling routes, with minor exceptions. For a specific trip, take the conditions of the individual routes into account.
