Ostrava: Industrial Heritage, Views and Nature
Accommodation in Ostrava
Ostrava can be reached by car, train and plane. When choosing where to stay, you can explore different sides of the city: mining history, former industrial sites, exhibitions, viewpoints and nature attractions. Each theme offers a different focus—from entering a mine to interactive exhibitions, nature trails and city views.
Mining History and Industrial Heritage
At Landek Park, the mining exhibition includes a descent into the mine in the original mine cage. The exhibition also features a unique collection of breathing equipment, showcasing its development from 1883 to the present day. For the descent and guided tours, it is worth checking the latest visitor information and schedules in advance.
Former mining sites also shape Ostrava’s industrial heritage: they now house museums. The Dolní Vítkovice site, once defined by coal mining and iron production, is now an educational, social and cultural centre. Guided tours cover the history of coal mining or the operation of blast furnaces. If you are interested in a particular topic, you can use the available tour themes to help plan your visit.
The Science and Technology Centre in Dolní Vítkovice offers another way to explore technology, with interactive exhibitions for children and adults. Ostrava Planetarium offers a different focus: its regular programme is aimed at visitors of all ages and covers astronomy as well as the natural and technological sciences. Alongside historic industrial sites, you can therefore choose from exhibitions and programmes about nature and technology.
Viewpoints with Different Vistas
The Bolt Tower is a 20-metre extension of Blast Furnace No. 1. Its viewing platform, 80 metres above ground, offers a view of Vítkovice. The New Town Hall’s observation tower offers a different perspective: an elevator ride takes you to a height of 73 metres, from where you can see Silesian Ostrava, Moravian Ostrava and the districts of Přívoz, Mariánské Hory, Vítkovice and Poruba. The two destinations thus differ both in their connection to industry and in the areas included in the views described.
Nature Trails and Geological Features
The botanical park at Ostrava Zoo has three botanical educational trails with a total length of 6 kilometres. In the Landek National Nature Monument, a nature and mining history educational trail runs through the area. Coal-bearing Carboniferous-type strata, formed 250 million years ago, are exposed there at numerous coal seam outcrops.
The trails therefore have different emphases: botanical education takes centre stage on the three paths in the botanical park, while the route through the Landek National Nature Monument combines nature and mining history. If you plan your visits around your interests, you can take these differences into account alongside the exhibitions and guided tours.
Castle and City History
Slezskoostravský Castle is a stone fortress dating from the 13th century. Its interior rooms house exhibitions on the history of the castle, the city and the entire region. This place brings together three interconnected historical perspectives, while the former mining sites and Dolní Vítkovice focus primarily on Ostrava’s industrial heritage.
