Klimkovice: Castle History, Spa and Forest Trails
Accommodation in Klimkovice
Klimkovice brings together historic buildings, green trails and the spa profile of Sanatoria Klimkovice. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these highlights separately: Would you like to explore the town’s history, spend time in parks and forests, or learn more about the spa destination?
Castle and churches tell the story of the town
Zámek Klimkovice is a Renaissance castle dating from the second half of the 16th century. After fires in 1854 and 1945, it was rebuilt. The castle houses Muzeum Poodří and the town’s information centre. The second floor features exhibitions about Klimkovice’s past and present, the natural environment of Poodří, and a memorial room dedicated to the painter Helena Salichová. If you would like to visit these rooms, check the latest visitor information in advance.
Kostel Nejsvětější Trojice is considered the oldest surviving historic building in Klimkovice. Following extensive renovation, the church serves as a venue for exhibitions, concerts and other public events. The tower of Kostel sv. Kateřiny Alexandrijské also has a distinctive history: it is 64 centimetres off its axis and has had a low roof since the fire of 1854, as the original Renaissance spire was not rebuilt. A Baroque chapel with a 25-metre-high dome was built beside the church between 1730 and 1738.
Memorial sites also offer insight into local history. The two Lípy osvobozených Klimkovic near Na Láni were planted in May 1946 in memory of the years 1918 and 1945. Lípa Bezručova was added there in 1958 to mark the 80th birthday of the Silesian poet Petr Bezruč. The monument to the victims of the First World War was erected in 1925 and commemorates 63 citizens of Klimkovice who died far from home on the battlefields. The grounds around the monument were redesigned in 2018, on the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia.
Parks and trails in the green
The publicly accessible Park Petra Bezruče combines green spaces with a range of learning and walking opportunities. The Naučná stezka veverky Augustinky educational trail has eleven information panels and a children’s trail. A cycle route also runs along the promenade in Stromovka Avenue from Klimkovice towards Polanka and Jistebník. Lesní park Klimkovice is a woodland recreation area with ecological play features, information panels and benches. It also has an educational trail and a movement area for rehabilitation in the forest for visitors with limited mobility.
Another scenic route is the restored Opavská cesta, which offers views of the surrounding landscape throughout the year and is considered a tourist attraction. Its section in Klimkovice passes through Hýlov, along the edge of Rakovec Forest. It includes a lime-tree avenue that was probably laid out in the second half of the 18th century.
The spa destination and planning your visit
Sanatoria Klimkovice lies amid the forests of Nízký Jeseník and offers views of the Beskydy panorama. The modern sanatorium was officially opened in July 1994. Today, it is a non-governmental healthcare facility specialising in rehabilitation and spa treatments. Vodoléčebné centrum includes an iodine-bromine brine pool, Finnish and steam saunas with a plunge pool, a whirlpool, a Kneipp path, massage showers and a relaxation room.
The spa park is used by patients, spa guests and the public. Its facilities include paths for pedestrians and wheelchair users, relaxation areas and places for shared activities. As facilities may change, check the latest information about the spa park before your visit. The different attractions show that, alongside its historic sites, Klimkovice also has a strong focus on rehabilitation and spa treatments.
Market and getting there
The traditional Slezský rynek takes place in front of Zámek Klimkovice. Stalls offer slaughterhouse specialities, fresh produce, sweet and savoury food, drinks, refreshments and handicrafts. Klimkovický jarmark is a recurring town event with traditional stalls, food, music and a programme for visitors of all ages. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with a market or fair, check the latest event dates in advance.
