Velká Polom’s cultural history is reflected in the Church of St. Wenceslas, the Milotička water fortress and the chapel in Hájek. Other points of interest include the water tower in the upper part of the village, cycling connections with different directions and route features, and local sports facilities. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether that means historic buildings, cycling or sports.

Church, Water Fortress and Chapel

The foundation of the Church of St. Wenceslas by the Přemyslid dynasty is dated to the late 13th century. Together with the parish complex, the church in Velká Polom is a protected immovable cultural monument. Its history therefore reaches back to the Middle Ages; the church and parish complex together form a focal point of the local cultural heritage.

The history of the Milotička water fortress is also marked by specific dates: the ruin is documented under this name from 1486. Under the Pražmů of Bílkova, the complex was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in 1573. These two dates mark different stages in its history. Today, the water fortress is an important archaeological site. Four single-storey wings enclose a rectangular courtyard—a clear layout that describes the structure of the complex.

The chapel in Hájek adds a later historical landmark to the older buildings. It stands on the road between Velká Polom and Hrabyně, near a small wood called Hájek. The chapel was commissioned in 1905 and built in 1906 by Josef Urbiš, a master builder from Mokré Lazce. Its location and construction history can be considered separately: the road indicates its position between the two villages, while Hájek is the name of the nearby wood.

Another landmark is the Věžový vodojem water tower. It stands at the highest point of the upper part of the village and is a distinctive feature of Velká Polom’s panorama. The church, water fortress, chapel and water tower provide different architectural reference points in the village’s history, from a medieval foundation and Renaissance reconstruction to a building from the early 20th century.

Cycling Routes and Sports Facilities

Cycle route 6200 passes through Velká Polom. From Háj ve Slezsku, it continues via the Čertův mlýn valley toward Plesná. Another connection leads south from the bus station to Krásné Pole. This cycle path is challenging, with a significant elevation change and a gravel surface. At the border of Krásné Pole, it joins cycle route W by a rest area and allows you to bypass road I/11 toward Ostrava.

The two routes differ in the features that are most useful for planning: for route 6200, the course and direction via Háj ve Slezsku, the Čertův mlýn valley and Plesná are specified. For the southern cycle path, the elevation change, challenging nature and gravel surface are the key details; its connection to route W is also described. This lets you assess the routes based on the directions and conditions actually stated, without treating them as equivalent routes.

In the eastern part of Velká Polom, the sports complex has a football pitch and tennis courts. Volleyball can be played outdoors, in the school gym and in the sports hall. The options listed therefore cover a range of sports and locations. Sport fishing is possible at the pond by MŠ U Rákosníčka. These activities add further options for planning your stay alongside the historic and scenic attractions.
