Žermanice connects the Žermanická přehradní nádrž recreation area with a disused quarry landscape and the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Water, cycling, nature study and culture offer different starting points for choosing a destination. This lets you consider which focus you would like to shape your stay.

Recreation at the Reservoir and Cycling

Žermanice is a gateway to the Žermanická přehradní nádrž recreation area. The reservoir was built between 1951 and 1958 and is used for recreation. Its construction period gives the body of water a historical connection, while its recreational use is a separate point to consider when planning a trip. Local cycling routes run along the shore nearby. This makes it possible to distinguish the general connection to the recreation area from the more specific planning of a bike ride along the shore. If you plan a bike ride, check the route conditions in advance.

Quarry and Wetland Habitat

Žermanický lom is an abandoned teschenite quarry that is now flooded and partly backfilled. A secondary wetland habitat has developed in this environment, home to protected plant and animal species. Numerous amphibians breed in the quarry’s pools. Its classification as a secondary habitat connects the quarry’s former use with the habitat that has developed there. For those interested in natural history, this offers a different perspective on water than the reservoir: the focus here is on the wetland habitat and its species, not on recreational use. Here, “abandoned” refers to the quarry’s former use, while flooding and partial backfilling describe its present state.

Chapel and Culture

The Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary adds a cultural dimension to the area’s nature and recreation themes. Its reconstruction improved both its technical condition and its appearance. The chapel hosted an Advent concert by the Permoník mixed choir from Karviná. The reconstruction and the concert relate to different aspects of the place: the chapel’s structural development and a specific musical event. This adds a distinct cultural focus to the landscape and nature themes.

The different connections to water are especially clear when planning a trip: the reservoir is used for recreation, while the former quarry is a wetland habitat with protected species and amphibians. This contrast can help you choose between general leisure activities and a more focused interest in natural history. Cycling along the shore is another specific option.

Current Notice About the Faunapark

Azyl & FaunaPark Blondies has been closed since July 1, 2026, due to illness and construction work, until further notice. If the park is a deciding factor in your travel plans, check its current status before visiting, as it may change.
