Holany: Pond Landscape and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Holany
Holany combines a distinctive pond landscape with architectural history and clearly identified cycling and hiking trails. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip here, you can choose where to stay based on different interests: bodies of water and nature, a specific route, or historic buildings. Holany offers points of interest ranging from relaxation by the water to cultural monuments.
Pond Landscape and Nature
Holany lies on the shore of Holanský rybník, which is part of the Holanské rybníky complex. The nearby complex includes 23 medieval ponds and is used for recreation. The southern edge of the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area borders Holany. Holanské rybníky refers to the complex of 23 medieval ponds; Holanský rybník is the individual body of water on the edge of the village and part of this complex.
Milčanský rybník is also used for recreation, and a small campsite is located on its shore. Its area is 29 hectares. An island in the pond is a protected nesting site for waterbirds. Recreational use and protection of the nesting site are therefore two distinct aspects of the same body of water.
Cycling and Hiking
Cycling routes 3086 and 211 lead from Holany to Milčanský rybník.
Two marked hiking trails lead from Holany to different destinations. The blue-marked trail to Dubá is 22 km long; the green-marked trail to Česká Lípa is 9 km. The route to Česká Lípa is therefore 13 km shorter than the route to Dubá. When comparing the two routes, their destinations, trail markings, and lengths provide specific points of reference for planning. The destinations differ depending on the mode of travel: both cycling routes lead to Milčanský rybník, while the marked hiking trails lead to Dubá and Česká Lípa.
Architectural Heritage and Historic Traces
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Holany is a protected cultural monument. Several notable traditional wooden buildings have also been preserved, including houses No. 3, 33, and 77. The timber houses in Holany date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The house numbers and dates provide a specific context for the local tradition of wooden construction.
Vítkovec was built as a late Gothic castle in 1455. Seven-metre-high corner masonry, remains of the palace walls, and ramparts have been preserved at Vítkovec. Sádky is a significant technical monument comprising four rectangular ponds dating from the 16th century.
These dates mark different historical reference points: 1455 for Vítkovec, the 16th century for the ponds at Sádky, and the 18th and 19th centuries for the timber houses in Holany. Together with the protected church, they provide a varied picture of the architectural and cultural heritage described here.
