Cvikov offers a range of ways to spend your stay: protected rock landscapes, routes to natural and cultural monuments, and a long history of architecture and brewing. When planning your visit, you can focus on the town’s history or take excursions to the rock formations in the surrounding area.

Rock Landscapes and Protected Areas

Part of Cvikov’s area lies within the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area. This includes part of the cadastral area of Cvikov and the entire cadastral areas of Trávník u Cvikova and Naděje. The protected area was designated in 1976. The Dutý kámen Natural Monument is located in the cadastral areas of Drnovec and neighboring Kunratice u Cvikova. It was designated in 1963 and covers 6.63 hectares.

Dutý kámen protects a sandstone ridge with rock formations created by erosion or human activity. A notable feature is the transformation of Upper Cretaceous sandstone where it meets a basic igneous rock from the Tertiary period. This is visible in the columnar and platy jointing of the sandstone. The focus here is therefore not only on the visible rock formations, but also on the geological processes that explain their distinctive structure.

Another natural monument is Naděje: a fissure cave with pseudokarst features in a scree field on the northern slope of Suchý vrch, near the Naděje reservoir. The area covers 0.75 hectares and was designated in 1966. Cvikov also has several ponds, including Cvikovský, Třeťák and Veselák. They are used for both fish farming and recreation.

Walking Routes, Hikes and Views

The routes offer different points of interest. A red walking route leads to the town’s monuments, while the green hiking trail passes notable rock viewpoints, rock cities and rock reliefs in the surrounding area. If you are mainly interested in architectural and cultural monuments, follow the red route. The green hiking trail is a good guide to rock landscapes and distinctive formations in the area.

The Schillerova vyhlídka rock viewpoint is preserved, though partly overgrown with trees. From there, you can see the area around Mařenice, as well as the peaks of Luže, Hvozd and Jezevčí vrch. In the wider Cvikovsko area and its surroundings, people hike and cycle in summer; in winter, conditions are suitable for cross-country and downhill skiing. Snow conditions can vary.

Cultural Monuments and Architectural History

The Church of St Elizabeth of Hungary is a protected cultural monument. Its original Gothic structure was converted into a three-aisled church between 1553 and 1558 by the Italian architect Benedikt Ferrvi. Its present appearance dates from the Baroque renovation of 1726–1728, based on a design by Prague master builder Václav Špaček. It has been protected as a monument since 3 May 1958. The sequence of building phases shows how the church changed over several centuries.

The first religious sculptures for the Stations of the Cross were installed in 1729 on the rocky basalt summit of Křížový vrch, also known as Kalvárie. The Křížová cesta–Kalvárie complex is a protected cultural monument. The original wooden Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre was replaced by a stone building in 1847; the Calvary group above the chapel had already been added in 1830. The Stations of the Cross date from the late 19th century. The site thus brings together elements from different periods of its history. It has been protected as a monument since 3 May 1958.

The Marian Column also tells a story of changes to the townscape: it was erected in 1697 and moved in 1995 from its original location near the town mill on Mlýnská ulice to the church. The sculptor Johann Christian Ulrich of Zittau is believed to have created it. At Lesní divadlo, the story leads to a quarry at the foot of Zelený vrch. A Cvikov amateur theater association built the theater in 1920; its stage even featured two wooden houses. Among the surviving remains are a room carved into the rock with a window, a short passage with a niche in the opposite wall, and remnants of the auditorium on the quarry’s low slope.

The Skalní kaple Panny Marie and Niessnerova vila offer further examples of historic architecture. The chapel stands at the edge of the forest and has a pointed-arch vault and distinctive relief decoration inside. The villa is an Alpine-style building with its original Art Nouveau interior intact. It was the family residence of textile factory owner Josef Niessner.

Brewing History and Tours

At the foot of the Lužické hory, Pivovar Cvikov is said to have been brewing since 1560. The brewery closed in 1968 and resumed operations in 2014 after extensive reconstruction. Traditional bottom-fermented beers mature in original stone cellars. These include the pale lager Klíč, with 12 percent malt extract, as well as Luž, with 10 percent, and Sklář, with 8 percent.

A guided tour takes about 40 minutes. It follows the entire beer-making process, from the basic ingredients to the finished product, shares information about the brewery’s past and present, and includes a tasting. Tours are offered to groups of ten or more: on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. Tours outside these hours can be arranged by prior agreement. The tour must be arranged and booked in advance; confirm the details before your visit.
