Explore Velká Dobrá through its landscape, a cycling route that runs through the village, and its varied traces of history. Its features range from a gently hilly setting to religious architecture and the remains of a burial mound cemetery. You can tailor your stay to specific interests, such as cycling, architecture or archaeology.

Landscape and cycling

The landscape is only gently hilly. The built-up area ranges from 395 m above sea level at the western edge to 430 m at the eastern edge. The “Kožová hora – Malé Kyšice” cycling route runs through Velká Dobrá and connects the village with Pletený Újezd, Braškov, Kyšice, Horní Bezděkov, Unhošť and Malé Kyšice. Cycling is therefore one of the specific ways to discover the village and its connections. Along the cycling route, there are information boards as well as tables and benches for resting. The boards provide information, while the tables and benches are specifically designated as places to take a break.

Chapel and religious heritage

The Chapel of the Finding of the Holy Cross (Kaple Nalezení svatého Kříže) has a simple, restrained design. Its floor plan is that of a single-nave church with a rectangular-ended chancel. “Single-nave” refers to a church space with one main nave; the chancel forms the architectural end of the building. The chapel was built in 1765. It was demolished and rebuilt in its present form in 1816, and consecrated in 1817. Its present appearance therefore dates from the reconstruction, not solely from the original construction date.

Mass is held in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of each month. Check the time before you arrive, as service times may change. Another religious landmark is the Statue of St. John of Nepomuk (Socha sv. Jana Nepomuckého): it was restored in 1969–1970 and placed beside the chapel above the pond.

Local history and archaeology

The fortress of Velká Dobrá was built toward the end of the 15th century and was later converted into a granary. Its surviving remains are incorporated into later buildings. Its architectural history thus includes several phases of use: the fortress was followed by use as a granary, and later its remains were incorporated into subsequent buildings. Velká Dobrá and Malá Dobrá were united in 1935. This date adds a later chapter in the village’s history to its much older architectural history.

The Velká Dobrá burial mound cemetery (Mohylové pohřebiště Velká Dobrá) is one of the few burial mound cemeteries in Central Bohemia to have survived on a larger scale. There were about 60 burial mounds on an inconspicuous eastern slope; most have been destroyed in the fields, while some remain in the forest. The original scale and the surviving traces represent different aspects of the site’s archaeological history.

The southeastern entrance to the Velká Dobrá burial mound site (Mohylník Velká Dobrá) is at N 50°06'58.30\", E 14°04'17.10\". Another navigation point is by burial mound No. 23, which has a monument, at N 50°07'04.29\", E 14°04'06.90\". As local paths may change, check the route before your visit.

Sports facilities

A municipal notice dated June 3, 2026, lists a clay tennis court and a multi-purpose court for rental at the Velká Dobrá sports complex (Sportovní areál Velká Dobrá). If you plan to use either court, check availability in advance.
