Podlešín can be explored through several distinctive features: the protected Podlešín linden tree, the geological rock outcrop known as Podlešín rock needle, the Podlešín viaduct, and a cycling route along an old railway embankment. Nature, geology, engineering, and cycling offer different ways to shape your stay. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Podlešín, these themes can help guide your plans, depending on what you want to focus on during your visit.

Linden Tree and Rock Needle

The Podlešín linden is a small-leaved lime tree and is still registered as a protected tree. It was declared a memorial tree on 25 July 1978. Its trunk circumference was measured at 420 centimetres on 9 September 2020. This figure relates to that date; the trunk circumference may change over time. The linden tree thus combines lasting protected status with a specific, dated measurement.

The Podlešín rock needle is an isolated, distinctly column-shaped rock outcrop about 8 metres high. It consists of arkosic sandstones through to conglomerates of the Slaný Formation. Its distinctly column-shaped form is the outcrop’s defining feature, making the rock needle a geological highlight alongside the linden tree.

You can reach the rock needle from Podlešín or Želenice via field tracks. The access paths can be very muddy after rain. If you plan to visit the rock needle, take this possible trail condition into account.

Viaduct and Sandstone Tunnels

The Podlešín viaduct is at the village entrance on the road from Knovíz towards Zvoleněves. If you approach from this direction, the viaduct is at a clearly identified point at the entrance to the village. The structure can also be linked to the history of local sandstone extraction.

Closed sandstone tunnels can be seen along the path to the rock needle. Sandstone for the construction of the viaduct was extracted from these tunnels. The tunnels are therefore not just a feature along the path; they also have a direct connection to the structure. For visitors interested in construction history and the extraction of building materials in the past, they offer a different perspective on the viaduct than its location at the village entrance.

Cycling Route on the Old Railway Embankment

The first stage of the local cycling route was built on an old railway embankment towards Zvoleněves. You can cycle along the old embankment for the entire length of Podlešín, as far as the area below the viaduct. The completed section begins at the wastewater treatment plant and connects to the cycling route to Zvoleněves. This gives you two useful points of reference for finding your way: the route along the embankment and the specific starting point of the completed section.

This information can help you understand the local cycling route when planning your trip: the old railway embankment is passable by bicycle as far as the area below the viaduct, while the completed section is described by its starting point at the wastewater treatment plant and its connection to the cycling route to Zvoleněves. The section built on the former railway embankment and the starting point at the wastewater treatment plant are different reference points.
