Ostrov: Pilgrimage Tradition and Mining History
Accommodation in Ostrov
Ostrov brings together a pilgrimage tradition, sacred roadside monuments, and traces of past resource extraction. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Ostrov, these themes can help you choose the focus of your trip: the religious cultural landscape, local history, or the landscape along the Ostrovský potok.
Pilgrimage Route and Roadside Monuments
The routes through Ostrov are lined with religious buildings, wayside shrines, and crosses. Ostrov u Tochovic lies on an important pilgrimage route and has traditional and historical ties to Svatá Hora in Příbram and to the Christian faith. The pilgrimage tradition therefore has both a geographical and a religious aspect: it is part of the village’s history and shapes the context in which its roadside monuments stand.
One specific example is the cross in Koletiny: it stands on the cadastral boundary between Lazsko and Ostrov and is associated with the municipality of Ostrov. The stonemason Jan Krotký, who lived in Ostrov at No. 7, erected the cross. The site in Koletiny served as the final stop when the deceased were accompanied from Ostrov to the parish church in Slivice; it was also a stop on pilgrimages to Svatá Hora near Příbram.
Other monuments also have their own dates. The cross in Zárybniční was restored in 2013; its date of origin is unknown. A wayside shrine dating from 1852 stands on the village green in Ostrov; it was renovated and blessed in 2011. This distinction is important for historical context: the restoration of the cross is dated, while both the creation of the shrine and a later renovation are dated.
Historical Traces and Mining
An early historical marker is the year 1379, when Ostrov appears in a tax register of the Archdiocese of Příbram. After the Hussite Wars, the village passed to a Benedictine monastery located on an island in the Vltava at the confluence of the Vltava and Sázava rivers. Silver mining developed in the area around Ostrov, with unusually high yields for the time; its main period of prosperity lasted until 1574. The mining history therefore refers to the area around Ostrov, while the register and the monastery’s ownership mark other historical layers of the village.
The Ostrovský potok also connects landscape and history: the gold-bearing stream flows through Ostrov. Spoil heaps and earthworks along the stream are associated with earlier gold washing. This is a different trace from the silver mining in the surrounding area: here the subject is possible gold washing and the interpretation of landforms, while there it is the main period of silver mining, which lasted until 1574. The “Fluchtštola” is believed to date from the 16th century; it may have led into the courtyard of Grunt Knottkowský.
