Osečany – Castle History, Park and Drahoušek
Accommodation in Osečany
Three themes offer starting points for planning your trip to Osečany: castle history, the park and the Drahoušek observation tower. The building history of Zámek Osečany can be summed up in two stages: a Renaissance fortress became a three-winged castle around 1680; around 1733, a castle chapel was added to the south wing. This sequence distinguishes the expansion from the later addition of the chapel.
Castle history in two stages
Around 1680, the Renaissance fortress Zámek Osečany was expanded into a three-winged castle. The three wings illustrate the structural change: the fortress became a castle with a more articulated form. Around 1733, a castle chapel was established in the south wing under Count Bubna of Litice; this probably marked the completion of the castle. The chapel was added just over five decades after the expansion, dividing the building history into an earlier and a later stage. The cellars and the remains of a round tower have also been preserved at Zámek Osečany. These features add further architectural details to the dated history of the castle.
Park grounds and visitor attractions
The park below Zámek Osečany was laid out by the Counts Lanius. The grounds covered five hectares; a pond west of the castle is part of the park. The area gives a sense of the grounds as a whole, while the pond’s location to the west identifies a specific feature. A restored Renaissance parterre is one of the attractions at Zámek Osečany. For trip planning, the park grounds and the Renaissance parterre can be considered as separate topics: the park information concerns the area and pond, while the parterre is part of the castle’s visitor attractions. Those interested in historic garden and architectural design will find different aspects here, from the size of the grounds to a specific design feature.
Drahoušek and events
The Drahoušek observation tower stands on a hill 504 metres high above Osečany; the elevation refers to the hill. The tower thus adds an independent, topographically defined point of interest to the castle and park. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus more on the history of the buildings and park or to make Drahoušek a separate highlight.
A municipal events calendar for 2026 lists Osečanská šlapka as an independently organised recreational cycling event in its 23rd year, organised by Osečany and Fidibus z.s. Osečanská běhna is listed there as a running event in its second year. This brings two different formats into focus: a recreational cycling event and a run. The edition numbers identify the respective events. To plan your dates, check the specific event days in the municipal calendar: the edition numbers alone do not show when the cycling event or run takes place.
