Drahenice: Castle, Heritage Zone and Hike
Accommodation in Drahenice
Drahenice offers several concrete starting points for a stay: castle history, protected buildings and a hike held every year at Easter. There is also a cycling route through the town and the district of Račany. When planning, it is worth keeping these themes distinct: the buildings offer different insights into the town’s history, while the hike and cycling route each have a specific connection to a date or route. This allows you to tailor the focus of your visit to your interests.
Castle History and Architecture
Drahenice Castle originated as a fortress dating back to around the 14th century. In the 16th century, the complex was expanded into the castle seen today. These two details describe different stages of construction: the approximate origins of the fortress and its later expansion. The castle is a two-wing, two-storey building with a mansard roof. A prismatic tower topped by a cupola adds to its architecture. A mansard roof has a roofline with a break in its slope; the number of wings and storeys describes the building’s layout. Its history and form therefore offer two different ways to appreciate the same building.
Protected Buildings in the Town
The former manor distillery in House No. 75 represents another chapter in the town’s history. This protected cultural monument lies within the Drahenice village heritage reserve and is an exceptionally well-preserved technical structure from the 18th century. Remains of the original heating system have been preserved in the central section. So alongside its former function as a distillery, a specific technical feature is also a focus here.
The Drahenice-Račany village heritage zone encompasses an ensemble of folk architecture. Drahenice is also home to the listed Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, near the school. Memorial crosses stand at the approaches and entrances to Drahenice; they were restored in 2010 and 2012. These locations draw attention to different forms of cultural heritage: an architectural ensemble, a chapel and memorial markers at the entrances.
Hike and Cycling Route
Drahenice lies below the distinctive Drahenická hora hill. Its highest point, Drahenický vrch, reaches 615 metres above sea level. The municipality organizes a hike to Drahenický vrch every year at Easter. If you plan to take this hike, check the date of Easter for the year of your trip.
The Jihočeská ochutnávka cycling route offers another way to explore Drahenice. It passes through the district of Račany and through Drahenice on Cycling Route No. 8214; it leaves Drahenice on Cycling Route No. 1062. The hike has Drahenický vrch as its destination and takes place at Easter, while the cycling route is characterized by its passage through the town and the route numbers given. As part of this cycling route, the castle can only be viewed from the outside. Check this condition for visiting and the route signage before setting out.
