Bužim offers several distinct historical and cultural highlights to consider when planning your trip: the medieval Stari grad fortress ruins, the Stara drvena džamija, Eko park “Borik” in the center, and memorial sites such as the Muzej-soba 505. brigade. Together, they offer a perspective ranging from the layout of a fortress complex and architectural history to park paths and historical exhibits. For your stay, you can first decide whether you would like to focus mainly on architecture, history or a park.

Stari grad and Stara drvena džamija

Stari grad Bužim is the ruin of a medieval fortress and is one of Bužim’s national monuments. The fortress is divided into an upper, or inner, town and a lower, or outer, town. It includes towers, loopholes, chambers, dungeons, bastions, walls and tabijas. The pairs “upper/inner” and “lower/outer” each refer to the same sections, not to four separate parts of the town. The division into two parts helps frame the layout of the complex; the listed features also offer a closer look at individual aspects of fortress architecture.

The Stara drvena džamija in Bužim tells a different story of construction. The mosque was built in the 18th century and restored in 1835. It was still in use in 2021. If you are planning to visit for prayer, check access locally; the information about its use refers to 2021.

No admission fee was charged for Bužim’s national monuments in 2021. If this is important for your plans, check again before your trip.

Eko park “Borik”

Eko park “Borik” is in the center of Bužim. By 2021, tourist paths had been laid out there, and wooden tourist facilities had been built at the entrance. Check the current condition of the park facilities before your visit. Unlike Stari grad, Borik is about paths and facilities in a park rather than the layout of a historic fortress.

Memorial sites in Bužim

The Muzej-soba 505. brigade in Bužim focuses on exhibits. Many personal belongings are on display there, along with an authentic wartime office. A Šehidsko turbe was erected in Bužim in 1997 for a person and their younger brother, Nevzet.

Highlights for your stay

When planning your trip, consider whether a building with a clearly divided fortress layout or a park with landscaped paths is more important to you. The mosque offers another architectural story through its construction and restoration dates; the Muzej-soba offers a different perspective through personal belongings and a wartime office.
