Klokot is shaped above all by its namesake karst spring and the river. The spring is one of the largest karst springs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. To understand the destination, it is worth considering two aspects: the geological feature of the spring area and the landscape along the river. Both are part of Klokot’s character, but they answer different questions about what makes the place distinctive.

The spring and river in the local landscape

An official notice published by Una-Sana Canton on December 31, 2021, lists the source of the Klokot River among the natural monuments. The spring area is surrounded by dense evergreen vegetation. This makes the immediate surroundings of the spring different from the meadows and pastures alongside which the river flows for almost its entire course.

The Klokot River is a left-bank tributary of the Una and flows through the settlement of Klokot. Its connection to the Una describes its regional waterway context; its course through the settlement places the river in its local setting. This distinguishes its hydrological classification from its connection to the place.

Other features of the spring area

Above the spring, there is a cave in a rock face. Four speleological sites were identified in the vicinity of the spring in 1986. Together with the karst spring, these features give the spring area a geological dimension that extends beyond the visible course of the river.

The place also has a cultural connection: a report published in February 2026 describes an authentic old Bosnian house in the settlement of Klokot near Bihać that is more than 230 years old.

Mountain river and water

The Klokot is a typical mountain river, with an average water temperature of 8 to 10 °C. For almost its entire course, it flows past meadows and pastures. The temperature adds a measurable characteristic of the waterway to the landscape description, while the meadows and pastures place its course within the surrounding landscape. This gives you different details about the river: its mountain character, its average water temperature and the landscape along its course.

Recreational area and directions

Bihać uses a municipal recreational area on the left bank of the Klokot, immediately downstream from the pumping station. The left bank and the downstream location are the spatial reference points; the area is thus positioned in relation to the river and the pumping station.

An access road to the Klokot recreational area runs alongside the pumping station grounds. This is useful to know when planning a visit. Check road conditions and any access restrictions in advance, as both may change.

Considering Klokot as a destination

If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Klokot, you can first consider which aspect of the place matters most for your trip: the geologically distinctive spring area, the mountain river and its water temperature, or the municipal recreational area by the river. These features offer different points of reference for considering Klokot as a destination and planning your trip accordingly.
