Cazin: Old Town, Houses and Culture
Accommodation in Cazin
Cazin brings together a medieval old town, historic houses and regional cultural attractions. If you are looking for a hotel in Cazin, you can choose the focus of your stay based on whether you are primarily interested in the town’s history or would also like to explore art, regional products and events.
Stari grad Cazin and its history
The old town of Stari grad Cazin stands on a hill above the modern town. Its medieval courtyard has a trapezoidal ground plan. The town mosque stands within the walls: it was built in 1879 and ceremonially reopened on November 2, 1883, after restoration. The old town and its mosque were declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2005.
Another historic building is the house of Ibro Alagić. It is located in the center of Cazin, behind the municipal administration building. The old town and its mosque are about 100 meters away as the crow flies, on a nearby hill. The house is considered one of the oldest residential buildings in Cazin. Based on its construction, the materials used and the workmanship of its structural elements, it is dated to the first half of the 19th century, during Ottoman rule.
Nurija and Devleta Pozderac hid Jews who were being persecuted in this house. Yad Vashem posthumously recognized them as Righteous Among the Nations in 2012. Another historic visit is associated with the house of Nurija Pozderac: Josip Broz Tito visited the head of the household there.
Art and landscape in the surrounding area
In the area around Cazin is Kula Radetina, a medieval and Ottoman-era fortification in a natural setting, with a cave and the Radetina stream. Together, the Kula, the stream and the surrounding natural heritage form a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, declared in 2012. Access is an important consideration for visitors: the terrain is steep and difficult to reach; the entrance is practically inaccessible because the former access corridor has been destroyed. Check the conditions locally before visiting.
The old town of Stari grad Ostrožac also offers cultural events in the surrounding area. In June, it hosts the “Ostrožac” Sculpture Colony, an open-air sculpture workshop. As the annual schedule may vary, check the exact dates for the edition you plan to attend. The old town also hosts historical and contemporary art exhibitions, often accompanied by educational programs. An open-air cinema is held there every year, with visitors watching film screenings on the old stone walls.
Chestnuts and local products
Chestnuts are a distinct part of regional culture. The ChestNUT Fest puts the region’s native plant species in the spotlight. At the 2024 event, exhibitors and professional chefs prepared culinary specialties. Chestnut honey is also part of the region’s product heritage: in 2010, the Cazin Municipal Beekeepers’ Association launched it as a protected product of controlled origin and quality under its own brand.
For several years, “Lito moje medeno” has brought producers, artisans and enthusiasts of local products together in Cazin. The visitor offering for the 2026 edition included tastings of local products and opportunities to meet local producers. The 2026 Cazinski sajam program included a festival of local products featuring, among other things, honey, milk and medicinal herbs. These events have different focuses: one emphasizes meeting producers and artisans, while the other showcases specific product groups.
Cycling and travel planning
The “Stazama Cazinske bune” cycling route was 16 kilometers long in its 2025 edition. It consisted of 80 percent paved roads and 20 percent gravel paths, and was suitable for all types of bicycles. The event was held for the third time in 2025 and commemorates historical events from the 1950s. As the route details were reported for that edition, check the information for a later year if you plan to include the event in your travel plans.
The town’s history, its events and the cycling route offer different ways to explore Cazin during a stay.
