Bosanski Petrovac can be understood through its literature, painting, local crafts, historic sites and natural features. The municipality lies at the junction of the Bihać–Sarajevo main road (M-5) and the Bosanska Krupa–Krnjeuša–Bosanski Petrovac–Drvar main road (M-14). The M-14 continues towards Croatia and the Adriatic.

Literature and Artistic Heritage

The traditional literary event “Dani Skendera Kulenovića” has been held in Bosanski Petrovac for more than 20 years. It includes a public competition for the best literary work in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The program also features a painting school for children, a literary evening, an exhibition of works created as part of the painting school, and the formal presentation of the “Skender Kulenović” literary award. The competition, literary evening and works from the painting school offer different artistic highlights. If the event is important to your travel dates, check the schedule in advance.

Museum and Wool Carpet Weaving

At the Jovan Bijelić Museum, visitors can see a gallery featuring the paintings of Jovan Bijelić as well as a Bosnian Room. The Jovan Bijelić collection there comprises 20 works by the painter and four works by other artists. It also includes personal belongings, such as a desk, painting supplies, a coffee set and a carpet. Paintings and personal belongings are thus displayed side by side in the collection, while the Bosnian Room adds another area to the museum.

Wool carpet weaving represents another aspect of local cultural history. This craft was maintained over generations and was part of the lives of the people who lived here in the past. The tradition is considered endangered. Unlike the individual works in the collection, carpet weaving reflects a craft practiced across generations and its place in everyday life in the past.

Historic Sites in the Municipality and Surrounding Area

The Crkvina archaeological site in Kolunić, within the municipality of Bosanski Petrovac, comprises the remains of a medieval church and a necropolis with stećci. It is designated a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In nearby Oštrelj, Titov voz was declared a national cultural monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2013.

Stari grad Bjelaj (Bilaj) is also nearby. It has a southern medieval section and a northern Ottoman section. The historic site is partially preserved and shows signs of deterioration. The sites offer different historical perspectives: Crkvina centers on the remains of a church and a necropolis, while Bjelaj is described as having two sections from different periods.

Hiking Trails and Karst Landscape

For nearby Oštrelj, a 2021 hiking description lists a circular trail of about 3.5 km and an easier route of about 2 km to the summit. The routes differ both in approximate length and in type: a loop or a summit trail. As the description dates from 2021, check trail conditions locally before using the route details for planning.

The natural features of Vrtoče include the caves Mala jama, Avdijina jama and Gaćina jama, as well as karst dolines, or ponikve. This means the area’s natural attractions range from specific hiking routes in Oštrelj to caves and karst formations in Vrtoče.
