Risovac lies at the far northwestern end of Petrovačko Polje in the Grmeč Mountains. Springs, a ponor landscape and two caves shape its geographical character; at the same time, the town’s history and traditional ways of working span different periods. Its natural and cultural features offer several ways to approach Risovac as a travel destination, depending on your interests.

Springs and Ponor Landscape

There are approximately 100 springs spread throughout Risovac. They form larger watercourses, known as “ponornice,” which flow from west to east or southeast. Thus, the landscape is defined not only by individual springs but also by larger waterways. Risovac is also considered the third ponor zone of Petrovačko Polje. The approximately 100 springs describe how water sources are distributed across the town, while its classification as the third ponor zone situates Risovac within Petrovačko Polje.

Caves beneath Risovačka Greda

Two caves lie beneath the striking Risovačka Greda, a spur of the Grmeč Mountains. The cave in the Vodice area is at an altitude of 600 metres and was once a doline. The second cave has a different hydrological role: it functions as a ponor all year round and collects water even during the driest periods. The former landform is one of the described features of the Vodice cave; the second cave is distinguished by its continuing function as a ponor. Both caves are part of the described rocky landscape, but their distinctive characteristics should not be confused.

Species in the Risovac–Bosanska Krupa Area

The cantonal environmental plan for 2014–2019 lists the European yew (Taxus baccata), yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea) and brown bear (Ursus arctos) as species found in the Risovac–Bosanska Krupa area. This information refers to that area. The brown bear is recorded as a habitat species; this does not guarantee sightings or indicate its current local abundance. If you are planning a trip specifically to see plants or wildlife, check the current species status in advance.

Settlement History and Local Traditions

Čatrnje, described as concrete cisterns, remain as landmarks among Risovac’s abandoned houses. Their function as cisterns brings water infrastructure into focus alongside springs and waterways. A 2024 field report traces Risovac’s settlement history back to the Roman Empire. In addition, the residents who remain in Risovac maintain historical agricultural and forestry traditions. The town’s account thus brings together material traces, a long historical perspective, and the traditional ways of making a living maintained by its remaining residents.

Location and Choosing Where to Stay

Risovac lies off the road from Bosanski Petrovac to Bosanska Krupa. This helps situate the town in relation to the route; check current travel conditions before setting out. If you are looking for a hotel in Risovac, you can weigh up whether springs and karst formations or the area’s settlement history and local traditions are more important to you when choosing your destination.
