Bihać: The Una, culture and medieval history
Accommodation in Bihać
The Una flows through Bihać and shapes the character of the city. At the same time, its history stretches far back: Bihać is described as the most important medieval fortress of the Pounje and is first mentioned in 1260 as a possession of the Cistercian Abbey of Topuska. This gives your trip a tangible connection between the river landscape and a range of historical themes.
Medieval city and architectural history
According to later accounts, particularly those from the 16th century, medieval Bihać was built on an artificial island and surrounded by double defensive walls. This interpretation is based on later accounts; it describes a city whose medieval character is closely linked to its fortifications and location on the Una. The first mention in 1260 and the later accounts of the city’s layout are distinct historical reference points.
One notable landmark in the city’s history is the Kapetanova kula. This historic building houses the Museum of the Una-Sana Canton, which displays rare artefacts from the time of the Japodian tribes. The Kapetanova kula is also listed as a historic building among the National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The museum and its listed status give the building both cultural and historical significance.
The Fethija Mosque is an Islamic place of worship in the Gothic style. With its courtyard, nine tombstones and inscriptions, it is designated a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its history dates back to an earlier use as a church: after the arrival of the Ottomans, the former Church of St Anthony was converted into the Fethija Mosque in 1592. Its architecture, present-day religious function and historical transformation are different aspects of the same building.
The “Enver Krupić” Gallery also offers a distinctive perspective. It displays works by an artist who devoted his entire professional life to depicting the natural beauty of this area. Another protected group of monuments includes the monastery building, the monastery and school of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, and the building where the first AVNOJ session was held, which now houses the AVNOJ Museum.
Cultural heritage in the Municipality of Bihać
The Municipality of Bihać is also home to a variety of protected historic sites. Sokolac is a protected historic area featuring a prehistoric hillfort, as well as a medieval and an Ottoman town. Garavice Memorial Park is designated a cultural landscape and a National Monument. These designations distinguish the sites according to their respective historical and cultural character.
The Rmanj Monastery is located in Martin Brod, in the Municipality of Bihać. This protected monument complex preserves remains of original frescoes. To understand the area’s cultural heritage, it is therefore not enough to focus on the city alone: places in the municipality also bear their own clearly identified traces of history.
Cycling, cultural events and the Una
Bihać is suitable for both mountain biking and road cycling. There are also cycling routes of varying difficulty in Una National Park. This distinguishes between two types of cycling, while identifying routes with different levels of difficulty in the park. The city’s tourism organisation also offers “City by Foot and Bike,” an experience that brings together nature, history and contemporary life.
If you are interested in the cultural programme, “Ulicom Bišća” is another point of reference: this traditional event takes place every year, usually in November. As future programmes may change, check the specific event dates when planning your trip.
The Štrbački Buk–Lohovo visitor zone in Una National Park is also open to individual visitors: admission includes a full-day visit to the zone and access to tourist-signposted roads and paths. At Entrance No. 5 in Martin Brod, admission includes a visit to Milančev Buk waterfall. Signposting and access details may change, so check the latest visitor information before your trip.
Near Bihać, Una Adventure offers guided rafting trips on the Una. The experience is suitable for beginners and experienced rafters; trips are accompanied by licensed guides and include full safety equipment. The route starts below Štrbački Buk waterfall and passes waterfalls, a gorge, caves and lively rapids. Before your trip, check whether a rafting excursion is available on your chosen date. This can help you choose when to stay based on a specific cultural event or river activity.
