Qark Shkodra: Lakes, Alps and Culture
Accommodation in Qark Shkodra
Qark Shkodra offers a range of options for planning your trip: Lake Shkodër and its wetlands, alpine landscapes, the coast, as well as historic sites and museums. First, consider which experiences you want to shape your stay. This will help you prioritize places and themes according to your interests.
Lake, protected area and coast
The Lake Shkodër Biosphere Reserve stretches from the Adriatic coast to mountain peaks over 2,000 meters high. Its landscape includes wetlands, forests and agricultural land. Lake Shkodër, which lies within the reserve, is the largest freshwater lake in the Balkans and a Ramsar wetland of international importance. Liqeni i Shkodres is designated a “Managed Nature Reserve” under IUCN Management Category IV.
The biosphere reserve is home to more than 280 bird species, including the Dalmatian pelican, as well as mammals such as the Balkan lynx. Fishing is also part of life around the protected area and continues to contribute to local livelihoods. The landscape is therefore more than a natural environment: it is also part of everyday local life.
Velipoja Beach offers a different focus on the coast. The water is shallow and gets gradually deeper, making the beach suitable for families and children. Meanwhile, Lake Koman is known for ferry trips considered some of the most spectacular in Europe. The lake was formed in 1985 following the construction of the Koman Dam.
History and photography
The medieval ruins of Sarda lie on Shurdhahu. The remains include defensive walls, church foundations and remnants of ancient buildings. Sarda was an important center during the rule of the Dukagjini family. The ruins offer a different way to explore local history than museum collections: here, architectural remains are the main focus.
Since 1996, the Shkodër Historical Museum has been housed in the restored monumental Oso Kuka House. Its exhibits include archaeological finds, traditional clothing, old weapons, handicrafts and household objects. The Marubi National Museum of Photography opened in Shkodër on May 9, 2016, as the first institution of its kind in Albania. Its collection includes more than 500,000 negatives and photographs documenting life in Albania, historical events and landscapes over more than a century. If you are interested in history, the museums offer different approaches: the Historical Museum brings together a wide range of objects, while the Marubi collection tells its story through photographs.
Alpine towns and activities
The Albanian Alps lie in northern Albania in the Shkodër region. An official Alpine itinerary connects Theth, Shkodër, Vermosh, Razëm, Bogë and Valbonë. In Theth National Park, almost 90 percent of the area is covered by beech forests; the park is also known for its rich biodiversity.
The history and trails in Theth offer further points of interest. Theth Church was built in 1892 and restored in 2005. A trail leads from the area of the old mill to Theth Canyon. Razëm is associated with hiking and winter activities in a mountain setting. In Vermosh, mountain hiking, nature and cultural tourism are part of the town’s profile, alongside alpine scenery, hospitality and local cuisine.
In Fushë-Arrëz, hiking, exploring nature and rural tourism are among the experiences on offer; the town is located near Qafë-Mali National Park. The guesthouses there prepare Laknure, pies, slow-cooked meat, mountain soups and fresh garden salads. Local produce and traditional techniques are used.
Choose which places to visit based on what you want to experience on your trip.
