Grilë on Lake Shkodra
Accommodation in Grilë
Grilë is one of the villages on Lake Shkodra and connects the lakeside landscape with the cultural heritage of the Vraka region. When planning your trip, you can choose from several different points of interest: the lake’s landscape and birdlife, a designated bathing and recreation area, fishing, and the region’s history and cuisine.
Lake Shkodra and the Landscape
Lake Shkodra extends into the Vraka-Gril area. Its Albanian zone is designated as a managed nature reserve; the lake was also added to the Ramsar List in 2005. The reserve designation applies to the Albanian zone, while the Ramsar listing applies to the lake as a wetland. A UNESCO announcement dated June 8, 2026, lists Lake Shkodra in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves and highlights its ecological, landscape, and sociocultural values. In the Malësi e Madhe area, the lake section from Vraka-Gril to Han i Hotit stretches for around 30 kilometers.
Birdlife and Nature Watching
The ecosystem of Lake Shkodra includes hundreds of plant and animal species. The lake provides a habitat for more than 200 bird species and is suitable for birdwatching. Pygmy cormorants breed in the marshy north; great white pelicans nest on floating peat islands at the northern end. The overall diversity of species and these specific breeding and nesting sites offer different perspectives on the lake’s natural environment. Habitat conditions can change; if you are traveling specifically to go birdwatching, check the local situation in advance.
Activities by the Water
Grilë is designated as a bathing and recreation area on Lake Shkodra. The lake also offers opportunities for fishing. If you are deciding between recreation at the designated area and a fishing activity, these are different ways to enjoy the water: the bathing and recreation area is associated with Grilë, while the fishing opportunity relates to the lake.
Culture and History
Grilë is one of the villages on the shores of Lake Shkodra where Albania’s Montenegrin minority lives. In the villages of the Vraka region around Grilë, the community has preserved its language, culture, religion, and traditions. A historical point of reference is the Church of the Holy Mother of God in Mladi Borič: it was built in 1869 as the cathedral church of the Vrača community.
A description from January 2022 mentions the traditional annual church service held on January 7 at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Vrakë. The service is celebrated in Montenegrin. If you would like to plan for this date, check the upcoming date and access arrangements in advance.
Regional Fish Cuisine
The culinary offerings by the lake near Grilë include fish dishes, especially carp, eel, and trout from Lake Shkodra and the Cem River. The region’s culinary connections thus extend beyond the lake to the Cem. Which establishment serves these dishes may change; check current offerings locally.
