Vejle Municipality: Valleys, Trails and Heritage
Accommodation in Vejle Municipality
In Vejle Ådal, broad valley landscapes meet trails for different ways of exploring. The valley is the largest tunnel valley in the area; hiking and cycling trails run through Ådal. Vejle Municipality has a total of 850 kilometres of hiking trails and more than 1,300 kilometres of cycling routes. You can plan your days around a hike, a bike ride or a mixture of both.
Landscapes between valley, fjord and wetland
Near Tørskind and Runkenbjerg, Vejle Å and Egtved Å meet in a broad valley landscape with numerous viewpoints. The landscape around Rands Fjord is also varied: hills, grazed meadows, open spaces and cultivated fields alternate with wooded valley slopes; from the viewpoints, you can look out over the lake. If you are particularly interested in wetlands and birdlife, consider visiting Kongens Kær near Vejle. The area is home to numerous birds, including white-tailed eagles.
In the area around Randbøl Hede, Frederikshåb Plantage and Syvårssøerne, open landscapes and cultural history come together. Marked trails near Østengård and Stenager Mølle offer another way to experience Vejle Ådal, leading to a viewpoint over the valley. These examples show how varied the landscapes within the municipality can be: from wetlands and lakes to open heathland and wooded slopes.
Exploring on foot or by bike
In Vejle Municipality, Hærvejen is an experience for both hikers and cyclists. When hiking or cycling, Bindeballestien follows the former railway line of the Vandelbanen. Here, a former transport route shapes the character of today’s trail. In Tørskind, walking also becomes part of experiencing landscape art: the sculpture there is designed to be experienced while walking.
The artwork in Tørskind is by Robert Jacobsen and Jean Clareboudt. It consists of nine individual sculptures that together form a single whole. Rather than viewing the objects individually, the work is experienced as a unified piece within the landscape. Those who enjoy experiencing nature and art together will find a different way to engage here than on a museum visit.
Jelling, the Iron Age and the Egtved Girl
In Jelling, a monument complex and the interpretation of Danish history come together. The visitor and experience centre Kongernes Jelling is located within the monument complex around the church. It tells the story of the Viking kings Gorm and Harald, their runestones, the great ship setting and the massive palisade. Burial mounds, runestones and the church illustrate pagan Nordic culture and the Christianisation of Denmark. The Jelling UNESCO World Heritage Site was inscribed in 1994 and is located in Vejle Municipality.
Another glimpse into the past awaits at Vingsted Jernalder, Denmark’s largest reconstructed Iron Age settlement. The activities offered there are based on the everyday lives of people in the Iron Age; independent visits are possible year-round. Egtvedpigens Verden, in turn, is a museum in nature at the site where the Egtved Girl was buried about 3,400 years ago. The stories are presented in an exhibition building, at a burial mound and in five storytelling zones. The museum is open every day, and admission is always free.
Art and city life in Vejle
You can also discover the city of Vejle through its architecture and art. Architecture Guide Vejle covers more than 100 buildings, urban spaces and parks, and offers suggested walking tours. The Vejle city centre sculpture guide takes you along self-guided sculpture routes; QR-code stories tell you about the artworks and their artists. Vejle Art Museum focuses, among other things, on local artists, contemporary art, graphic art and portraiture.
A striking feature of the cityscape is Fjordenhus: four connected cylinders reach a height of 28 metres and link Vejle Fjord with the city centre. The artworks by Olafur Eliasson on the ground floor are open to the public daily and free of charge. At Vejle’s Cultural Museum, located in Spinderihallerne, exhibition themes range from the city’s industrialisation to the Iron Age; the Haraldskær Woman and Vejle nightlife from 1990 to 2010 are also featured. Spinderihallerne itself is a renovated industrial complex, originally built as a cotton spinning mill in 1896.
When planning your trip, you can first decide whether hiking and cycling routes, nature watching, cultural heritage or art should be the focus. The places and themes described offer different reasons to explore the municipality; which ones suit your stay depends on your interests.
