Brejning – Fjord Landscape and Cultural History
Accommodation in Brejning
Brejning combines the coast of Vejle Fjord with a rich cultural history. When planning your trip, you’ll find a range of interests here: beaches and rolling landscapes sit alongside traces of the former institutions, an unusual church, and routes through nature and history.
Fjord Setting and Landscape
Brejning lies in very hilly terrain that slopes down towards Vejle Fjord. Brejning Beach is on the south side of the fjord. The beach is somewhat stony and child-friendly—a specific feature to consider when choosing a waterside destination.
The area around the beach also offers opportunities for walking and cycling. Those interested in a variety of landscapes will find both the coastal setting and the hilly surroundings reflected in descriptions of Brejning. Train services are another feature of the town and can be taken into account when planning your journey.
Harbour, Playground, and Trails
At Brejning Marina, there are shelters and a fire shelter. A nature playground sits right by the water at Brejning Harbour; a sensory trail also runs through the harbour area. These offer different experiences: the playground is directly beside the water, while the sensory trail adds a route through the harbour area to your visit.
The Brejning–Trindhøj route passes through woodland and across fields. Near Kellers Minde, a historic trail also runs through an area where architecture, nature, and history are closely connected. The route descriptions therefore have different focuses: one is defined by woodland and fields, the other by the interplay between the built environment and nature.
The History of De Kellerske Anstalter
De Kellerske Anstalter was founded in 1865 by theologian Christian Keller and moved to Brejning in 1899. The buildings were constructed over an extended period, with much of the work taking place around 1900. The complex forms an important cultural environment. Kellers Park is a former institutional site and is now used for housing, businesses, and leisure activities.
A 2022 description characterizes the collection at Kellers Minde Museum as unique in Denmark. The items described include objects used for treatment and care at the institution, as well as books and pictures documenting its history. The collection thus focuses both on the institution’s practical work and on its history.
Brejning Church is also connected with the town’s history: it was intended both for the residents of Brejning and as a church for De Kellerske Anstalter. Architect Mogens Koch designed it in 1941. The unusual Modernist church lies on the northwestern edge of Brejning, near Vejle; its shape is reminiscent of a bishop’s mitre.
Other Traces in the Town
Near Brejning are the remains of the old fortification Trindvold, also known as Trindhøj. It consists of an earthwork with a small flat-topped mound, where a wooden tower is believed to have stood. The site is considered one of Denmark’s best-preserved motte-and-bailey castles. Another artistic work is “Your Perception”: the artwork consists of three sculptures in the park behind Comwell Kellers Park.
The Mindelunden cemetery in Brejning is also part of the legacy of De Kellerske Anstalter. It was the final resting place for more than 1,650 people from the institutions. Together with the history of the church and buildings, this site offers another way to explore Brejning’s past.
