Hvidbjerg combines a beach on Vejle Fjord with a distinctive dune landscape and a rich local history. During your stay, you can explore different aspects of the destination: Hvidbjerg Beach, the view from Hvidbjerg Dune, and the historical traces of its development into a holiday and artists’ destination.

Beach, Dune and Fjord

Hvidbjerg lies on the southern side of Vejle Fjord and is part of Vejle Ådal. A distinctive feature of the local landscape is Hvidbjerg Dune: the sand dune is 34 metres high and protected as a rare landscape feature on Vejle Fjord. Its layers tell of very different periods of formation. The lower 22 metres consist of marine deposits from the Miocene, dating back 22 million years. Above them lie twelve metres of glacial deposits and post-glacial dunes.

From the top of Hvidbjerg Dune, the view stretches across wooded Trelde Nés and the outer part of Vejle Fjord. Here, the dune’s geological formation and a wide view of the fjord landscape sit side by side. The beach and the dune are different points of reference: Hvidbjerg Beach is by the water, while the viewpoint by the dune is higher up.

Getting Around the Beach and Surrounding Area

In 2026, Hvidbjerg Beach is among the beaches awarded the Blue Flag; there are toilets at the beach. If the beach is relevant to your travel plans, you can take this information and the year into account. Hvidbjerg Dune offers a different destination: the viewpoint is accessible only on foot.

Parking is available on Hvidbjergvej; from there, the cliff is within 500 metres. As access and parking conditions can change, check the latest information before your visit. National Cycle Route No. 5, Østkystruten, runs through the Hvidbjerg area.

Buses are also relevant for getting around: Route 204 stops in Hvidbjerg and runs between Vejle and Fredericia. If you plan to use this service, check the current timetable before travelling. This gives you several types of information for getting there: the bus stop in town, the cycle route through the area and the parking options on Hvidbjergvej.

From Holiday Destination to Artists’ Colony

Hvidbjerg’s history as a travel destination is reflected in plans and transport links from the early 20th century. In 1913, a consortium of Fredericia residents wanted to develop Hvidbjerg into a tourist area with holiday-home plots and a bathing beach. From 1914, the Vejle Dampbaade ran services from Vejle to Hvidbjerg and back. One of the vessels was the fjord boat “Hvidbjerg”. These journeys are part of the town’s history and are not a current transport connection.

Initially, Hvidbjerg served as a campsite, with visitors bringing their own accommodation. The early holiday plans, campsite and steamship services show different aspects of tourism development at the time. Hvidbjerg also quickly developed into an artists’ colony. The artists’ group “Spiralen” was founded here, with Finn Gerdes at its centre. The town’s history therefore extends beyond its development as a holiday destination and includes its own artistic tradition.

Which side of Hvidbjerg would you like to discover?

When planning your stay, you can choose what to explore in Hvidbjerg based on your interests: the beach, dune landscape and views sit alongside historical accounts of holiday plans, transport and art. The specific local attractions are quite distinct: the beach has toilets and the Blue Flag for 2026, the dune combines geological layers with views over the fjord, and the artists’ history leads to “Spiralen” and Finn Gerdes. This comparison can help you choose the aspects of the town that are relevant to your trip.
