Randbøl Hede shapes Randbøl’s connection with nature; hiking trails and viewpoints give this theme several concrete forms. Randbøldalmuseet and the medieval Randbøl Kirke add touches of cultural history. When looking for a hotel in Randbøl, you can consider whether the landscape or history should play a greater role in your stay.

Heath, Sand and Seasonal Lakes

Randbøl Hede is one of Denmark’s largest inland heaths. It was formed by fine sand deposited by meltwater as it flowed west through the tunnel valley near Vejle. The Syvårssøerne are also part of this landscape, but they are not always present: in years with heavy rainfall, they fill with water. Water here is therefore a changing part of the landscape, not a permanent feature.

Hiking, Horse Riding and Views

The Hærvejen passes through Randbøl Hede and Frederikshåb Plantage on the 13-kilometre stage from Haraldskær to Bindeballe. A riding route just over 10 kilometres long runs entirely around the heath. Here, the Hærvejen is a stage between named endpoints, while the riding route is a circular trail around the heath. Route conditions and access rules may change; check them before your trip.

There are three marked hiking trails on Randbøl Hede, and three more in Frederikshåb Plantage. Three trails starting at Naturrum Kirstinelyst lead directly onto the heath. Naturrum Kirstinelyst at Randbøl Hede has an exhibition, an outdoor kitchen, shelters, riding facilities and a birdwatching tower.

Stoltenbjerg is the highest point of a sand dune ridge that runs from east to west and rises 17 metres above the flat heath. From there, you can look out over Randbøl Hede. The viewpoint is accessible only on foot via sandy paths. When planning your visit, both the height of the dune ridge and the described access via sandy paths are part of what to expect from this destination.

Museum, Crafts and Church History

The permanent exhibition at Randbøldalmuseet covers the history of industrial production in Randbøldal from 1732 to 1983; the exhibition content may change in the future. During events, visitors can try their hand at traditional weaving and papermaking. Visitors can also try historical water-lifting techniques; the arrangements for these activities may change. These hands-on activities are therefore subject to specific conditions and should not be assumed to be available as part of a programme at all times.

The medieval Randbøl Kirke dates from around 1150 and is centrally located on the Hærvejen. Nearby is the burial mound Kong Rans Høj, which dates from the Late Stone Age or Early Bronze Age. A prehistoric burial monument and a medieval church thus stand close to one another. This creates a contrast in the area’s cultural history, while the museum and craft activities offer a different way to explore the history of industrial production.
