The Viking fortress of Aggersborg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest of Harald Bluetooth’s five ring fortresses. Together with archaeological museums, the cliffs of Ertebølle and the paths around Vilsted Sø, Vesthimmerland reveals different sides of history and landscape. When choosing a hotel for your stay, you can plan your trip around the things that interest you most: cultural sites, hands-on activities or nature.

The Viking Age, archaeology and literature

At the Vesthimmerlands Museum in Aars, archaeological finds are displayed alongside well-known silver art and changing exhibitions. Visitors can explore 13,000 years of cultural history. The architecture is also part of the museum experience: the exhibition building has a floor plan shaped like Thor’s hammer.

In Farsø, the Jensen Museum focuses on the lives and works of Johannes V. Jensen and Thit Jensen. The exhibition “Arbejdets Rum” features objects from Johannes V. Jensen’s study. The Thit Jensen exhibition is based on objects and stories from her life. In Farsø, both a writer’s workplace and personal life stories take centre stage.

The Stenaldercenter Ertebølle offers another way to explore prehistory and early history. Visitors can try Stone Age activities: archery, travelling in a dugout canoe, looking for signs of wild animals, making cord from bast and nettles, painting with Stone Age paints, and grinding grain. The centre is only a few hundred metres from the archaeological site of Ertebølle Køkkenmøddingen. Here, hands-on activities complement the story of the past, while the site provides a distinct archaeological point of reference.

Landscapes and routes around Ertebølle and Vilsted Sø

Ertebølle Hoved is a particularly scenic area, with 20-metre-high cliffs of moler clay and volcanic ash layers from the Tertiary period. The beach lies below Ertebølle Hoved. This location offers two ways to experience the surroundings: through their geological features and their coastal landscape.

At 450 hectares, Vilsted Sø is the largest freshwater lake in North Jutland. The circular route around the lake is 20 kilometres long; the bridge also makes it possible to take a northern loop of about 12 kilometres or a southern loop of about 10.5 kilometres. These distances give you a concrete basis for comparing the longer route with the two shorter options. Numerous breeding and migratory birds live by the lake. The birdwatching tower and the bridge offer good opportunities for birdwatching.

There is also a clear option for cycling: the Vilsted route is 36 kilometres long and runs between Rønbjerg, Ajstrup and Sebbersundkloster. Near Rønbjerg, it connects with the regional Ertebølleruten 36 cycling route and the national Limfjordsruten 12 cycling route. If you prefer walking or want to take a break in nature, Vesthimmerland has 19 shelter sites. They are available free of charge for an overnight stay outdoors or a rest during a walk.

Museums, traditions and experiences

The Limfjordsmuseet is situated between the Limfjord and the Frederik VII Canal and offers guided boat trips on the canal. The museum’s Snapseri is also part of the visitor experience: locally sourced herb schnapps is made there using Aalborg BASIS, and visitors are invited to tastings.

Herregården Hessel is one of Denmark’s last four-winged manor houses with a thatched roof. Throughout the year, the estate is brought to life with crafts, household work, old traditions and exhibitions; individual events vary. As part of the educational programme, children put on historical clothing, are given different names and work in groups on suitable craft and work tasks based on the period and season.

On Livø, nature and history exist side by side: the island has heathland, nutrient-poor pastures, ancient oak forests and a rich variety of wildlife. The island also tells the story of the isolation institution for men that operated there from 1911 to 1961. The Vesthimmerlands Museum offers guided tours on Livø lasting about 1.5 to 2 hours; individual visit programmes can be arranged. If you are planning a guided tour or a specific programme, check dates and arrangements in advance.

Uhrehøje Plantage has a nature base, a shelter site, an accessible toilet, covered seating areas and a picnic house. Naturkspeditionen runs nature events and educational programmes throughout Vesthimmerland, using a minibus and various trailers loaded with equipment. These offerings complement the independent routes and viewpoints with organised nature and learning experiences.
