In Ertebølle, different travel interests come together: the history of a Stone Age site on the Limfjord, the natural history of Ertebølle Hoved and landscapes you can explore on described routes. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Ertebølle, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Are you particularly interested in prehistory, geology, the coast or routes through the landscape?

The Site and Stone Age History

The preserved and protected part of the “Ertebølle køkkenmøddingen” site lies on the Limfjord, along a former Stone Age coastline. This connection places the site within an earlier phase of the landscape. The site is known internationally; it also gave its name to a period at the end of the Older Stone Age. A specific place and a broader chronological context are thus linked. If you are interested in prehistory, this connection is a distinctive focus for planning your trip.

Stenaldercenter Ertebølle combines a large outdoor experience area with an indoor exhibition about the Ertebølle period. The site and the center offer different points of reference for the historical theme: the preserved, protected part of the site on the one hand, and the combination of an outdoor landscape and an indoor exhibition on the other. You can choose your focus based on whether you are most interested in the site itself or in the combination of an outdoor experience area and an exhibition.

Geology, Fossils and Beach

At Ertebølle Hoved, the geological side of the destination takes center stage. The cliff is 20 m high and consists of moler and volcanic ash layers. The moler contains fossils of plants, fish, birds, insects and turtles. Both the structure of the cliff and the fossils in the moler are therefore natural-history topics. In weighing up your interests, this offers a different focus from the Stone Age significance of the site.

Ertebølle Strand offers another coastal perspective: the beach is approximately 300 m long and consists mainly of sand with a few stones. Here, the approximate length and shoreline composition define the place; at Ertebølle Hoved, the focus is on rock layers and fossils. This distinction can help you find the natural feature that interests you most on your trip.

Routes and Getting Around

There is a parking area and toilets at Ertebølle Hoved, near Gl. Møllevej 3. From there, you can walk or cycle along a dirt track to the site. This track is part of National Cycle Route 12. The Rød rute Ertebølle also passes the site and runs through open areas along the Limfjord, as well as heathland and woodland. These are different points of reference for planning: the dirt track connects the parking area to the site, while the Rød rute takes you through these landscapes.
