Løgstør: Canal History and Boatbuilding Tradition
Accommodation in Løgstør
For a trip to Løgstør, canal history, boatbuilding traditions and experiences on the water are specific themes to choose from. The activities also vary by date: guided boat tours and walks through the old town are seasonal, while the Muslingehøstfest takes place every year on the first Saturday in April. If you choose one of these themes when planning your trip, check the current dates in advance.
Canal History and Boatbuilding
The Frederik VII Canal was dug by hand from 1856 to 1861 to create a waterway past the shallow grounds at Løgstør. Its construction method, timeframe and purpose are all connected: the canal was designed to pass precisely around these shallow grounds. The site is also home to Denmark’s oldest working swing bridge. The tradition of clinker-built wooden boats is also closely tied to the town’s maritime heritage and has been officially recognized by UNESCO as living cultural heritage.
Museum, Workshop and Guided Tours
The Limfjord Museum displays original Limfjord vessels; at the Historic Boatbuilding Workshop, you can see the restoration of old vessels up close. The two areas focus on different things: one showcases original vessels, while the other features the work of restoring them. In July and August, the museum offers guided boat tours on the Frederik VII Canal aboard the museum boat Grevinde Danner.
During the summer season, the Løgstør Købstads Vægterlaug holds guided walks through Løgstør’s historic old town every Wednesday. On the walks, the Vægterlaug wear historical clothing, sing watchmen’s songs and tell stories about the town. This makes the walk, which focuses on the old town and its stories, distinct from a museum visit featuring vessels and restoration work.
Mussel Festival and Regional Tastings
The Muslingehøstfest is an annual tradition in Løgstør and takes place on the first Saturday in April. The festival includes the first mussel harvest of the season: the mussels are brought ashore, approved by the Oldermænd, and transported onward by horse-drawn wagon. The town’s chefs then prepare the mussels for a tasting served with a schnapps.
Another seasonal culinary offering is available at the Limfjord Museum’s Snapseri. Visitors with admission to the Limfjord Museum or those who have taken a trip aboard the Grevinde Danner can enjoy a sample of homemade schnapps and a small snack made with regional ingredients. Participation is therefore tied to one of the two museum experiences mentioned above.
Swimming and Activities on the Water
The harbor bath in Løgstør offers swimming in the harbor from a large wooden platform. The Løgstør Open-Air Bath features a 250-meter-long sandy beach and a bathing jetty. Access to Løgstør Beach is also clearly described: from the canal parking lot, cross the canal bridge to reach the beach. Paddleboards can be rented at Dok55 in Løgstør. Check in advance whether this is available when you visit.
