If you want to combine nature, cycling and local history in Aalestrup, you’ll find a variety of themes for your stay. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether a cycling route, the bicycle museum, the woodland areas or activities along the Simested Å best suit your plans.

Woodlands and connections along the Simested Å

Baneskoven in Aalestrup covers 6.5 hectares and is a deciduous forest, mainly of beech and other mixed deciduous trees. Åglimt covers around 2 hectares; oaks define its mixed deciduous woodland, while larches also grow in the west. A path runs through Åglimt, connecting the woodland with Den Jydske Rosenpark and the shelter site. The rose park is set in natural surroundings along the Simested Å. This creates a direct path connection between the woodland, the park and the river landscape.

Himmerlandsstien: route and landscape

Himmerlandsstien is a nature trail, walking and cycling route with a crushed-stone surface, stretching from Løgstør to Viborg. It was created by converting a former railway line that ran from Løgstør via Aalestrup to Hobro and Viborg. The route passes through hilly moraine landscapes, heathland, meadows near the fjord and large meltwater valleys. Unlike the path through Åglimt, which connects the woodland, rose park and shelter site, Himmerlandsstien stretches between Løgstør and Viborg. The two routes therefore differ in scale when planning an outing.

Bicycle history and local history

The Danish Bicycle Museum is the only museum in the Nordic region to cover the technical development of bicycles in detail over time. Its collection comprises more than 200 bicycles, from wooden bicycles and the “Væltepeter” to well-known modern models. If the exact size of the collection is important for your visit, check it in advance, as it may change.

The museum is housed in a building constructed in 1921 as the director’s residence for the bicycle factory “Jyden.” A visit therefore brings together the technical development of bicycles and the industrial history of the building. Aalestrup Church stands in the heart of the town and is easy to reach on foot. After a fire in the late 1980s, it was closed for almost a year; during this time it was restored and repainted.

Fishing, play and swimming

The Simested Å has clear water and good fishing opportunities, particularly for trout; local conditions may vary. The Ålestrup Angling Association maintains many kilometres of fishing waters along the Simested Å. To fish there, you need both a national fishing licence and a local fishing licence. As access to the association’s fishing waters may change, check current access arrangements and fishing licence requirements before you go fishing.

The Bevægelsesparken playground by Rosenparkens Pavillon offers play facilities for all ages. As facilities may change, check their current status in advance if needed. Aalestrup Outdoor Swimming Pool has three pools: a 25-metre pool, a training pool and a diving pool. Facilities may change seasonally, so check which pools are currently available before your visit.
