For a trip to Nørlev, the Skallerup Inland Dunes and Nørlevkæret offer two distinct natural settings: a dune landscape shaped by drifting sand and a fragile bog. There are also trails for walking and cycling. If you plan your trip around the landscape you want to experience, it is best to keep the access conditions for each area in mind: public access to the dunes does not mean that the bog is also open to the public.

Skallerup Inland Dunes: a landscape with a history

The Skallerup Inland Dunes date back to the period from 1500 to 1700. They were formed by drifting sand that devastated large parts of northern and western Jutland. Their formation places the dunes within a far-reaching transformation of the Jutland landscape and gives this natural area a historical dimension. In total, the Skallerup Inland Dunes cover 2,010 hectares of protected land, which is open to the public. Nature and landscape history come together here: you can explore a large protected area while learning about its origins.

The plant and animal life also defines the dunes. They provide habitats for characteristic plants, insects, animals, and birds. These include sea buckthorn, pasqueflowers, and thyme, as well as meadow ants, spadefoot toads, and shrikes. The examples therefore range from plants to insects and amphibians, as well as birds. The species you may see can vary by season, so individual sightings should not be counted on as a fixed part of your itinerary.

Nørlevkæret: a rare bog with limited access

At 21 hectares, Nørlevkæret is a rich fen and one of Denmark’s rarest and most threatened bog types. Its biodiversity includes eight different orchid species; the species composition may change over time. The bog extends eastwards from the green dune by the North Sea to the Litorina cliff, an ancient Stone Age coastal cliff. Its landscape connections therefore reach from the dune edge by the North Sea to a former coastline to the east.

For planning your visit, access is crucial: Nørlevkæret itself is not open to the public. The area can be viewed from the nearby Nordsøstien trail. The section of the walking trail from the car park to the river mouth is considered an exceptionally beautiful landscape experience. This lets you take in the bog landscape from the trail without assuming access to the bog itself. Before setting out, check trail conditions, which may change, and follow local guidance on accessibility.

Cycling route, walking trail, and horseback ride

The Vestkystruten passes Slettingen, where the nature school is located in the inland dunes by Nørlev Strand. Slettingen is a specific point of interest along the route for a cycling trip. Bus routes 80 and 99 run near Slettingen. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetables before departure.

Walking and cycling offer different ways to experience the landscape: the Vestkystruten is the specific cycling route, while the Nordsøstien is a walking trail associated with Nørlevkæret and the section leading to the river mouth. Another activity is offered by Saga Heste, which runs horseback trips on the beach and around the Skallerup Inland Dunes. Check dates and availability in advance if you would like to include a ride in your travel plans.
