In Lønstrup, you can choose between the beach, hiking trails, local history and crafts as different focal points. If you are looking for a hotel in Lønstrup, consider whether beach days, trails or cultural interests should shape your trip.

Beach and coastal landscape

Lønstrup Beach is a sandy beach with good bathing conditions for children and adults. It is also a winter bathing beach: water samples are taken there even outside the bathing season, so winter bathers can monitor the water quality year-round. Calm, shallow lagoons form by the groynes, and the beach offers good opportunities for beach fishing. Swimming, winter bathing and beach fishing are therefore different activities that can all be enjoyed at the same beach.

Lønstrup Klint stretches for about 13 kilometres, from Harrerenden north of Lønstrup to Furreby north of Løkken. Rubjerg Knude and Lønstrup Klint are designated as a Natura 2000 site by Hjørring Municipality. Near Lønstrup, Rubjerg Klitplantage is known for several orchid species, including broad-leaved helleborine and eggleaf twayblade.

Hiking trails and getting around

The North Sea Trail passes through Lønstrup on its way to Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. The section that runs through Hjørring Municipality is part of the North Sea Trail. The Clover Trails consist of four walking routes, all starting at the Lønstrup Tourist Office. This distinguishes the North Sea Trail route towards Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse from the four routes that share a starting point.

To drive to Rubjerg Knude, follow the signs for Fyrvejen in Lønstrup from Exit 5 near Vrå. The Lønstrup Tourist Office is in the town centre and offers brochures, inspiration and maps year-round.

Local history and maritime heritage

Bækslugten was formed as a result of a natural disaster on 11 August 1877. The ravine became 50 metres wide and 15 metres high, dividing Lønstrup in two. The landmark known as the “Signal Mast” was once used to warn fishermen at sea of bad weather.

The history of Lønstrup Church can also be traced through specific dates: the church was consecrated in 1928, and its tower reached its full height in 1939. Inside the church is the old Romanesque granite baptismal font from Mårup Church, which contains a German baptismal bowl from 1575.

Crafts and galleries

In Lønstrup’s open workshops, you can follow the creation of crafts at close range. In several galleries, visitors can watch artists at work and talk with them about art. Dorte Visby’s open ceramics studio and gallery are located in a 200-year-old barn at Mårupgård.

Over the past 40 years, Keramoda’s old Strandvogtergård has developed from a farm into an artists’ community. Keramoda also serves as a venue for a range of courses and events. The arts and crafts offering therefore ranges from glimpses into the work of craftspeople and artists to courses and events.
