Rubjerg Knude is one of the best-known protected areas in Hjørring Municipality; from Tolne Nature Park, the view stretches as far as Skagens Odde. Those planning a trip here can combine nature areas and marked trails with water activities and cultural destinations. The varied landscapes and collections offer many different reasons to go exploring.

Nature Areas and Landscapes

Tolne Nature Park is Denmark’s northernmost nature park. Marked hiking trails wind through the natural landscape, which can also be explored by bicycle or on horseback. Slotved Skov and Slotved Dyrehave feature diverse flora and fauna, small lakes, birds and deer. Tornby Klitplantage offers a different range of scenery: coniferous and deciduous forests, scrubland and dunes sit alongside dune heath and beach, ravines and hills. Farmland, reed beds, dune lakes and waterways are also part of this area.

These nature destinations also offer different ways to get around: Tolne Nature Park can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, while Tornby Klitplantage has four marked hiking trails. One of two regional cycle routes, the Tolneruten, passes through Tolne Nature Park. These are useful options to consider when planning time outdoors, whether for a walk or a bike ride.

Hiking Trails, Trains and Water

The municipality provides visitor information about hiking trails, cycling routes, Kløverstier routes and areas for boating. For some nature destinations, travel arrangements can also be planned alongside the route: Tornby Klitplantage is within walking distance of Tornby station. Rail options include local train 76 from Hjørring towards Hirtshals and regional train 3235 from Aalborg via Hjørring. Check current timetables before travelling. To reach Slotved Skov by train, travel to Sindal station; from there it is about 2 km to the edge of the area.

Uggerby Å offers another perspective on the municipality: the river is navigable for 50 km, from Ilbro to the sea. Non-motorised boats may travel on it year-round from 7:00 a.m. until sunset. These include rowing boats, kayaks and canoes; boats must be clearly marked at the bow with a registration number. Check the rules before launching. This lets you take the route length, time of day and requirements for your boat into account when planning.

Monasteries, Museums and Historic Sites

Børglum Monastery combines medieval history with specific exhibition themes: in the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the Diocese of Vendsyssel and the northernmost major monastery of the European Premonstratensian Order. On display is an embroidered, life-size copy of the Bayeux Tapestry. The historic herb garden presents medieval medicinal herbs, with QR codes beside the beds and short informational videos.

The Vendsyssel Art Museum focuses its collection on artists connected to Vendsyssel. It includes paintings, sculpture, applied arts and graphic art dating from around 1945 to the present day. Guided tours of special exhibitions and permanent collections, as well as sculpture walks through the town, are also available. The “I sporet på kunsten” project adds another perspective on art, with QR codes that provide access to audio stories. Those interested in a longer sweep of history can explore the Vendsyssel Historical Museum, with its history and objects from the earliest times to the present day.

Hjørring’s townscape also offers a variety of historical points of interest. The old town features half-timbered houses, alleyways, cobbled streets and three medieval churches. Sct. Hans Church dates from the decades around 1200; inside is an early Gothic fresco of Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child. Sct. Catharinæ Church preserves a Romanesque baptismal font from Gotland and part of the original medieval church, which now forms the transept. Købmand Riis’ Gård is one of only two surviving half-timbered houses in Hjørring; the Old Town Hall at Axeltorv was built between 1831 and 1834.

For public art, Hjørring’s sculpture guide lists more than 250 works spanning around 150 years of sculpture. The sculptures are located throughout the town and can be viewed at any time. At Det Grafiske Værksted, visitors can see original art prints and learn about the printmaking process.

When to Visit and Events

The Dana Cup Hjørring takes place every year in calendar week 30. It brings more than 1,000 teams and up to 25,000 visitors from around 50 countries to the municipality. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the specific dates for the year in question.
