The area around Nørre Rubjerg can be explored through its landscape, trails and history. Rubjerg Knude is particularly striking: a suggested walk leads through the sand, the lighthouse houses an exhibition and offers a climb to the top, and the old churchyard preserves traces of the former church. This offers different ways to plan your trip – exploring the terrain, learning about the lighthouse’s history and seeing historic remains.

Landscape, Trails and Nature

Rubjerg Knude is the highlight of the stretch of steep coast between Lønstrup and Nørre Rubjerg. Its highest part is just under 100 metres above sea level; the upper layer of windblown sand is about 40 metres thick and continues to grow. A hike through the sand to Rubjerg Knude is a particularly obvious activity. The suggested walk is 4–5 kilometres long and can be strenuous because of the sand. From the car park by the lighthouse, it follows the ridge of the dunes southwards; the return route goes along the Nordsøstien through Rubjerg Klitheplantage to the car park. The return route therefore follows a different stretch from the trail along the dune ridge.

Near Grønne Rende, a wheelchair-accessible path leads inland through the sea buckthorn. Nature offers other points of interest too: Rubjerg Klitheplantage provides habitats for at least seven orchid species, while bird migration in the area is a sight to see in spring and autumn.

Lighthouse and Exhibitions

A 14-square-metre exhibition container stands in the car park by Rubjerg Knude Fyr. It provides an overview of Rubjerg Knude and the history of the lighthouse. Topics range from the formation of the landscape by Ice Age glaciers to the lighthouse’s construction in 1900 and its spectacular relocation 70 metres inland. The exhibition thus brings together natural and architectural history in a chronological account. Inside the lighthouse, a staircase allows visitors to climb to the top. The exhibition and the climb offer different ways to explore the site: the container provides a historical overview, while the staircase leads up through the structure. Strandfogedgården also houses an exhibition about Rubjerg Knude.

Churchyard and History

The history of the old church at Rubjerg is closely connected with drifting sand. After several centuries of sand drift, it was dismantled in 1904 and moved a few kilometres inland. The old churchyard preserves remains of a dismantled medieval church and grave monuments. A suggested walk leads south from the car park by the lighthouse to the churchyard. The new church was built using materials from the old one; the Romanesque baptismal font was also reused. The churchyard and the new church thus show two sides of the same story: traces of the dismantled building remain at the old site, while parts of its predecessor were reused in the new building.
