Hjørring combines paths through the city and its landscape with art and architectural history. For your travel planning, you will find different focuses: Christiansgave as the oldest city park, paths with various routes and a selection of cultural sites. This way, you can decide whether you want to experience Hjørring primarily on foot, with a focus on its art or through its historical buildings.

Paths, green spaces and viewpoints

Christiansgave is Hjørring's oldest city park and offers a green point of reference in the city. The Kløverstier also lead through different landscapes. The blue Kløversti follows Hjørring's watercourse from the city centre along the new, winding stream. It runs through the Folkeparkruten to the rainwater basins in Bejts Vænge.

The Folkeparkruten is a 2.0 km-long hiking trail. Its path is paved and lit during the dark hours. The red Kløversti, Hjertestien, leads from the centre up through the Hjørring Bjerge and runs through protected meadow areas and nutrient-poor grasslands. Thus, both the ascent through the Hjørring Bjerge and the protected landscape areas are part of the described sections of this route.

The four existing Kløverstier each begin and end at Springvandspladsen. From the Bellevue viewpoint tower, the view extends over the Hjørring Bjerge, the town of Hjørring and the North Sea. There is also a car park, as well as tables and benches, at the viewpoint tower. In addition to the paths described, this adds a viewpoint and specific facilities on site.

Art and history in the city

The Vendsyssel Art Museum is located in the heart of Hjørring in a former cloth factory. Its collection of modern Danish art spans from 1945 to the present. It includes painting, sculpture, applied arts and prints, and focuses on art and artists with a connection to Vendsyssel. The various art forms and the regional connection give the museum visit its own focus within the city's cultural offerings.

Art in public spaces is also part of Hjørring: more than 150 sculptures are spread throughout the city. The sculpture route takes you to a selection of them. You can therefore either focus on the route or experience sculptures as part of the cityscape.

The focus among the historical buildings is on the medieval churches. Sct. Catharinæ Church is a Late Romanesque brick church in the inner city. It is the youngest of Hjørring's three medieval churches and, at the same time, the city's main church. Skt. Olai, Skt. Hans and Sct. Catharinæ are Hjørring's oldest preserved buildings. Another historical landmark is Provstegården, Hjørring's oldest estate.

The Vendsyssel Historical Museum offers a guided tour of Hjørring's medieval churches. It looks at visible architectural details and what they reveal as sources about Hjørring's medieval history. The tour's availability may vary; check in advance whether it is offered on your date. Stone dolmens from the Stone Age can be seen in the museum garden. The herb garden is home to a large selection of medicinal herbs from times past.

Museum opening hours

From 10 August to 22 December, the Vendsyssel Historical Museum is open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. As seasonal opening hours may change, check the times before your trip.
